OPTION DESCRIPTIONS:

1 - the velostat fix. i send you an envelope of velostat for free (it's dirt cheap) which you glue to the underbelly of your pads. This works for a while, very well, in fact. ask distortedtekno, i mailed him a strip of velostat that'll last him a while. each velostat package will give enough for 32 pads, ie 2 changeous. the velostat fix is NOT permenant, but it's meant to hold people over in dire straits. this is a do it yourself endeavor that utilizes the original akai design/pads.

2 - the conductive rubber fix. i send you a package containing conductive rubber ala Frank Eventoff, creator of the original mpc/interlink FSR. you adhere this over the pad sensor with--yes--a bit of black electrical tape. this entails taking apart your entire pad assembly in order to replace the existing conductive element. this solution is also DIY and utilizes the original akai design/pads. i don't have a price on the conductive rubber yet. there is a chance that this option will not be offered if for some reason i can't get Eventoff to hook me up with the rubber, but i think he will.

3 - the new sensor/pad solution. This is the first of the 2 options you have to send your machine to me. i will be putting brand new, non-akai pressure transducing sensors into your mpc. these are inastomeric sensors, self contained units that will not break. they have a lifespan similar to interlink FSRs. i will also be giving you custom molded pads, hand cast at my own home. these pads will be specifically tailored to complement the sensor. you ship me your mpc, i fix it as quickly as i can and then i ship it back.

4 - DELUX - the same as number 3 - you ship me your mpc and i do my job - but i get fancy. there's an aspect of personalization involved - ie imprinted lettering/small images on the pad surfaces. ideas include letters, numbers 1-16, an eyeball or hieroglyphic, a marijuana leaf...etc. since this is cosmetic it won't cost much more.

i know i haven't included pricings here, but that will depend largely on materials and this poll - the interest yall show and the numbers i will get will impact how much i will charge. i'm not trying to make serious bank here - i've already spent a lot of money and even more time doing all this research and experimentation, if anything i'd be happy to break even.

you are the folks who are gonna make this all worthwhile to me, not only because the potential for me to get compensated for my work, but also the more altruistic "i helped people" feeling i'll get from happy mpc1000 users banging their pads with wild abandon, remembering with humour the good old days when they thought about selling their mpcs because of the pads.

but let's be real - besides the lovey dovey nice guy bs, this is VERY important to me on a professional and institutional level - not as a business, but for the experience/notoriety. i'm a junior at a public college in fairfax, va. an english major. i love to write, as many of you could attest to by my at times completely rediculous posts, but i love to make beats and fool with electronics more. much, much more.

i'm applying to Mills college in san francisco for grad school in a year and a half. this place has a tremendous electronic music program - and part of it involves instrument building and electronics work. there is the potential here for me to really make my mark and have a bangin' portfolio to show the admissions folks at mills. so this whole mpc1000 mod thing is important to me most of all for that reason.

the poll is self explanitory--what kind of solution are you personally most interested in?

also, what kind of names do you think i should give to this project?

this isn't a thread for complaints about the pads, bickering about different mpcs. this is strictly about the 1k pad problem, as well as those who just want to make their mpcs better. if you have nothing constructive to say, get the **** out and stop trying to rain on the parade.

this is the best news for the 1k since the jj os, and i'm not afraid to say it because, as el-p said in "stepfather factory," i'm not only the inventor, i'm a client. i will be the first person to get this thing done and working, the guinea pig. i'm like the guy in spiderman i who injects himself with that green sht, except i won't nearly kill macy gray with pumpkin bombs

anyway vote and comment, please!

If I was in the states I'd go for number 3. Like a shot.

Nym, you can make money on this, there's alot of mpc1k's out there.
Portfolio is good, and this could actually pay for u to go thru college.
Set up a company, hire a couple of technicians on a per-job basis,
then you don't have spend all your time fixing mp's.

If all goes well with this, you should make a small site or even a myspace to connect with 1k users that arent on this forum. Some people might be a little scared to send thier 1k out to someone they dont know, so you should have something set up legally, like a contract of some sort so you dont run into trouble

As im in Australia just getting my mpc there and back would be over $100aus. As mentioned this leaves me without my (barely working) mpc for too long. If it was easy itd be cool to just send the new pad design of option 3/4. Then I can just install it. I know in the Akai pad soloutions post alot of people are saying 20-30bucks or whatever. Just to give you my opinion I rekon around $100aus would be cool which is aPROX $75US i think. Actually Id prob go higher as I dont really want a 2000xl or 2500 I just want my pads to work i love teh machien otherwise.

Do you use teh old pad construction at all in teh new pad setup, as in the parts from it?

co-sign. i voted for the 3° solution.

for all non-US ppl, sending goods to usa cost a lot.

maybe you could just design the industrial process. then re-sell it to some reparing compagnies over the world.

I wonder: how many MPC1000s have been sold worldwide as per today? 100.000? more? would that be enough to support a business? I doubt it.

Disregarding that: I would appreciate the possibility, when pad replacement becomes necessary, to be able to purchase replacement parts (especially if they are better than the original), but I would be wary of sending my MPC off to the USA. I'd rather purchase the parts (including custom moulded/decor pads if available) and do the replacement myself, or have some technician do it here in Paris.

I would also like to stress that, as staded many times already, I have no significant problems with my MPC1000 pads. I can only compare with the RS7000 sensitive pads (don't know what system they use) which I always found too hard and lacking responsiveness: Even when hitting as hard as I could I could barely reach a velocity level of 70-80, never more. In contrast the MPC1000 pads are Ok with me.

damn i totally forgot - i would also offer a DIY kid for option 3, but the DIY is minimal, just unscrewing your mpc, taking out the existing pads and putting in my sensor bank/rubberr pads. this would most def. be the best bet for folks who are comfortable themselves (distorted and other folks who frequent the fix it thread) and those who are not w/in the states. sorry i forgot to mention that.

i could also offer those funky custom pads this way too. i'd be happy to send stuff to you folks rather than you sending it to me.

id definantly buy some....i just know alot of folks wont want to send they're mp off...especially if thats they're soul means of making music

i'd probably go insane if i had to send my mpc off w/out getting it back for a month (or longer depending on overseas shipping

i don't think there'll be any soldering. i've yet to figure out an aspect of adhesive (i'd rather use screws than adhesive).

this will be cheaper than shipping your mpc to the states/within the states, but if you're afraid of the DIY aspect, you'd best take a chill pill so your hands don't shake.

optiosn 3 and 4 do NOT use any of the pad technology beside the PCB board. we'll have done FAR better than that. if these sensors work as well as i'm told, we will have done the best we can given the current pcb.

as for hiring other folks, i wouldn't feel comfortable with that.

maybe you could just design the industrial process. then re-sell it to some reparing compagnies over the world.

haha i doubt they'd want to buy em...but i could certainly design the models and then package/ship them. it shouldn't be half as bad as 2 way mpc1000 shipping.

thanks for all the votes/feedback

I vote for #2. I sorta knew all along there were additional motives for doing this...you'll be working at/with Akai and JJ soon..

...what?

there are/were never any hidden motives. don't start sht here too, please.
and there's no way i could work with jj, even though i'd love to
and i doubt akai would hire me if they read any of my posts

Dag, if I wasn't eBay'ing my 1000, I'd be all over this.

Comments:
#3 - 'inastomeric'? Typo? Also, is this one of those single-sheet solutions?

Again... you-dah-man!

dude,

totally down with #3 DIY option if that becomes possible - i'm in australia too so posting that shyt would just take too long!

would this fix just make the pads more sturdy and enduring - or would it also give them more of a similar feel/sensitivity to the other MPs, like the 2500 pads (just played one for the first time the other day - that shyt is nice... :) )

keep us posted yo, definitely down with this.
you do good work.
