The Akai MPC 1000 and a MIDI keyboard.

I remember back in the days when I used to rock the MPC 2000 XL (I sold it and copped an ASR10 instead, stupid-ass monkeyshitty thing to do, I know) I once tried to get it running with a midi-keyboard, so I could tweak those basslines a little easier/better... That didn't work well. I mean, I got it working like it was supposed to, but it was all **** up 'cause the pads & the keys had nothing to do with eachother it seemed.. I heard it was because the MPC sent out some kind of strange drum-machine type-of MIDI.

Now, I'm sitting here with my ASR10, eagerly awaiting the day (February 1st) the MPC 1000 will be ordered by, yes me. And I'm wondering... How does it work with a MIDI keyboard compared to the MPC 2000 XL? Is it still the same..?

I have found a nice way around it (I just program my basslines on a software sequencer and sample them back into the sampler), but it sure would be nice if it could rock nice with a MIDI keyboard like I want it to..

Nah, it'll hook up fine. Just stick the MIDI out of the controller into the MIDI in of the MPC

I mean, on the 2000 XL there's was almost impossible to find out where the different pads turned out on the MIDI keyboard. There was no way I could play a decent bassline like that.

I suspect that the MPC1000 is laid out in the same way as the XL. Of course, it's not a problem - you can rearrange the note assignments on all the pads into musical order (so note 35 (B) is pad A1, note 36(C) is pad A2, etc) - if you do this all the notes work out in the correct order on the keyboard. It's the same techique I use for all the multisamples on the site so they play properly no matter what.

And you don't have to rearrange them each time you set up a program - just do it once, save that program as 'default.pgm' and load it in before you start a new program.

well from what i know thats a long process on the 1k but on the 2kxl there was a function call auto chromatic assign were lets say pad1(piano sample) could be spread out like a keyboard from keys 35-98 .

yes, but Autochromatic assign does not set up the notes to be played in the correct order on a MIDI keyboard - this is why you need to manually change the note assignments yourself

Does all this mean that you can map samples across a midi keyboard? Or that you put in the samples of each individual note and then assign them to a note on the keyboard?

Also, if nobody's noted this, the 1000's pad note-editing interface shows the standard GM2 drum names for each pad, which is great for GM sequencing using an external tone generator.

Are you saying that a MIDI cntlr can tweak the sounds coming out of the MPC-1000.
Like cutoff ?? Would it be for specific tracks or the whole unit?Thats one of the reasons I never got an MPC it didnt have the knobs !!!!!!! Is this is a solution ??

Example: can I sample my tb-303 on MPC track #1 and tweak just track 1???

I don't believe the settings on the MPC are controlable via CCs, ask someone who knows its MIDI spec better. All we're saying is the MPC can record keyboard phrases just as well as any other MIDI playing.

You can different effect combinations, such as a thick filter and gradually less thick filters, and program effect changes into the sequence on the MPC, but this is all as far as tweaking effects over time.

You can input any MIDI message into an MPC from a MIDI controller, as long as the MPC is capable of recognising that particular MIDI message.
