Hi,

I just bought the latest 1000 with version 2 os - no upgrades have been added in any shape or form and won't until I know the machine is in good working order. I'm having lots of fun learning about the 1000 except when I try to change the default bar number to extend my loops of the preset sounds. The machine won't recognize bar number changes and starts glitching like hell shortly after I try it.

Does any of you good folks know why this is happening? I'm still learning about it so have I maybe missed something?

Any help would be much appreciated because I love this machine and would hate to write it off.

Thanks a lot for reading.

natestate.

Weird... I haven't heard of that particular problem. When you said "Version 2 OS" do you mean 2.0 or 2.1 or 2.11? 2.11 is available at the AKAI website, free of charge. Instructions for installing it are there too, top left of this page:

http://www.akaipro.com/supportos.php#MPC1000

If I were you, I would do a factory-reset (hold down the ERASE key while powering on the MPC), then install OS 2.11 and see if that helps.

Also, consider buying the JJ OS, or at least try the free version out. You will love it. That can be found here: (that's the Google English-translated version)

Thanks for replying. Version 2.1. I don't want to update anything until I know the machine isn't damaged so I can return it to the company I bought it from. I mean, is this glitch possibly associated version 2.1 problems? It seems like too major a one to release a product on the market though maybe that's just naive because I know a certain company beginning with the letter r that is occasionally good at doing that sort of thing.

Default bars are set at two right? I made up my loop with preset sounds, tried to increase the bar number of the loop and it just plays back at the default 2 bars, then starts stutter-glitching, like the thing has lost control. The machine is fine with real time sequencing (when you switch sequences real time with the dial) and in song mode is fine too. Just trying to increase the bars seems to be the issue.

Are you trying to increase the bars while the sequence is playing? If so, I don't think you are supposed to be able to do that.

No, I'm changing the settings then running the sequence. My changes are registered (from 2 to 6 bars say) alright and even display that change when I'm running the sequence. But it still only plays for 2. I only seem to be able to extend the measures in song mode or real time jamming between different sequences for the bar change is just not complying.

Just curious (and this may sound like a no-brainer) but what does holding ERASE down whilst powering up the MPC actually do? I've not come across that procedure in the manual as regarding upgrading or formatting.

I would go into song mode and then have your two bar loop repeat 3X, for a total of 6 bars, and then convert this to a new sequence. See if that works. I'm not trying to be an ****, but I think you're doing something wrong, I just can't think of what.

I'm simply moving the cursor on to the bar field and turning the data knob from 2 to 6, then running the sequence. Is this wrong Shupe?

Holding the ERASE key while powering up resets the MPC. Think of it as a factory reset. It won't affect your data at all, you won't lose anything, it's simply a reset to defaults type deal. I can't remember if it resets to the original OS though (usually 1.07)... If it does, no big deal, you can simply re-load whatever OS you currently have. The inly reason I mentioned the reset was that it has been known to cure wierd problems people have run across.

As for the problem you are having, if you make a sequence and THEN increase the number of bars in that sequence, the MPC is basically adding blank bars at the end of your sequence. It will not automatically loop out what you already have, so you will need to us the copy function in the SEQ EDIT mode to actually "extend" your sequence.

Not sure if that is what you were missing or not...

Thanks very much T...I think you may have solved my problem. I appreciate your hanging in there and troubleshooting.

Hope you're having a good week.

Ok, I'm having a nightmare. I've tried to upgrade my operating system but it's not happening. In an attempt to get to the bottom of this matter I have checked both my manuals and followed the Akai website directions to the letter. At the stage when I've to push the record button on the 1000 to process the upgrade the machine does nothing. The machine registers indeed that the newer version is on my CF card but is not copying it to the machine and rebooting itself. Where is a Yamaha RS7000 when you need one?

Try loading the OS from the load screen (mode+pad 2 [I think, no MPC on front of me]). It should work like that. And then it'll (the MPC) give you instructions on what to do next.

No, that won't work if he is upgrading from an AKAI OS.

You need to make sure that you save the OS .BIN file in the ROOT directory of your CF card, and make sure there are no other .BIN files there. Then power off your MPC, power on holding WINDOW, and then when prompted (after the memory check, i think) press REC.

Why wouldn't it work? That's what I did. Matter of fact, I did that today when I loaded up the Akai OS and then switched back to the JJ.
If I'm wrong, all good. I'm just not sure why it wouldn't work for him if it did for me.

Which AKAI OS were you using? Because I thought it didn't work on AKAI OSes 2.1 and before.... maybe they added that feature in 2.11, but before that, the only way to upgrade from an AKAI os was powering on holding WINDOW. The capability to load a .BIN file from the LOAD screen was added by JJ.

it was 2.11. For sure. And I remember that I didnt hold the window button upon power up cause the JJ bin file that I loaded wasnt on the root menu.
