down button suddenly stops functioning!

HI i have a pritty simple but devistating problem , i was making a beat

moving around the main screen and then by down cursor button just stopped

working. i restarted the mpc and still no go. for no reason! those anyone

know what i should do please help !

it's called a soldering iron. it's a must-have tool.

it heats up to roughly 250 degrees fahrenheit (sorry, my country's idiotic with notation) and melts a soft metal to make a contact between PCB and device (in this case, the tact switch)

you will be nervous at first but this is a skill you MUST LEARN
like i said, soo many hundreds of dollars saved...

you may also want its companion, the solder sucker.



to repair, you will apply the soldering iron to the solder holding the broken tact switch in place, then when it melts, use the sucker to draw it out. do that on all four and eventually rock the tact switch out of place.

then put the new tact switch in place and heat a little solder back in to make the contact/also to hold the tact switch in place.

the hardest part is taking apart the mpc and removing the PCB but it's very doable and if you take your time/keep calm, you will be successful

Hey Nym I remember my cursor key stopped working and made a thread about it a few months ago and you said yours stopped then started again.
Mine did the same thing it was awsome!
It took about 5 reboots but eventually the cursor came back to life and never died again so J tawn you can try rebooting a few more times before you do the fix and press the key a bit to see if it will fix itself.
I was totally shocked. Never has a piece of gear stopped working then
corrected itself on me to last very long and its been going good for months now

yes, that certainly does seem to happen with these tact switches.

however, if i can make a correction, it wasn't the REBOOT that did the trick there. this is a hardware issue.

these tact switches are very common, very cheap switches used in thousands of types of electronic devices around the world. they suffer from several issues, including eventual wear (lifespan of something like 3000 or so actuations, which is not much esp on oft-used buttons like the cursor keys, MAIN and MODE).

however, sometimes the issue is nothing more than a stray speck of dust that somehow gets in the thing. or, as the tact switch goes through its "life cycle" so to say it stops working or works strangely. then, after enough use, it gets a 2nd wind, sells the harley davidson, and goes back to work as an accountant.

however, whenever i see trouble brewing on the horizon for any of my switches, i swap that sucker out for a fresh one.

I have a few switches that act up every now and then

my right cursor and my F4 key give me the most trouble. usually all they need though is a good firm pressing and they still work and sometimes they work flawlessly. I would only replace the switch if absolutely necessary if you are new to soldering. I've soldered plenty before but still haven't even bothered with the switches because they usually don't cause much of a problem

Nym gives good advice though, but he's hardcore into this shit -- what he says is an 'easy fix' really is, but it involves a small bit of knowhow

practice soldering on something else before you bust right into the MPC if you aren't confident in your ability

these are sealed units, so it'd be easier to solder in a new one than take it apart and clean the contacts.

quick correction, when i said 250 f i meant 250 C, the soldering iron i referenced has a temp display and it was in fact in C, not F

jtawn sorry i didnt get back to you busy moving my studio for 20th time these past two years. nym gots yo back with the tac switches. I bought a hundred of them just to be safe for the future. buying them individually is more expensive.

practice practice the damn soldering. i can't recall how many 360 remotes i F*#&d up when replacing the xbox remote lights.

daym that seems like some crazy sh*t fu*kin up on your mpc i think im just gona let my dad do it his an electricion and if not what would be good to practice on remote controls?

it sounds a lot scarier than it is. pretty difficult to really screw up your mpc.
have your dad do it though, he'll handle it no sweat, no issue, just watch as he does it so you know what you are doing if there's a next time.
