Sounds like a good deal. If you can't afford SX (I know it's more than a pocket full of change) SL is a steal for 300 (compared to SX at like 700 or whatever) and Sound Forge is a kick ass program as well.

Cubase has some minimalist sound editing features but for anything serious you need a dedicated editor.

One thing I've found I can use Cubase as a replacement for, beyond using it as a standard DAW, is a total replacement for Acid. I never ran into any serious kinks with timestretching in either environment, and loop sequencing is a breeze in Cubase, once you learn key commands and all. The only thing that's missing is automatic tempo/key matching which Acid accels at.

cubase sl and sx are basically the same. same number of audio/midi channel. handles the same amount of vst. the only real differents between the two are surround sound, spectrum analysis and the number of audio outs. they are basically the same. a good deal for cubase is cubase se ($99 us) which has unlimited midi channel, rewire (for reason, ableton live3, fruity loops), 48 audio tracks. i think this is a good deal. i have been cubase user since cubase 1.5 (i have cubase 3.7, cubase 5.1, cubase se, cubase sl) and cubase se is rock solid. i think buying cubase sx is a waste of money because if you have been making music for less 5 years you will never use all the features of cubase sx. i would buy cubase se to get an understanding of how it works than get the upgrade. now cubase sx cost 7 bills, i would get cubase se ($99), reason 2.5 ($299 the factory sound banks su*ks/buy some reason refills $150) and recycle ($130) and still have money for mickey ds for the ride home. this setup with mpc is dangerous. it is a great project studio and will grow as you grow.

this is the same for mbox and pro-tools. yes pro-tools is a professional audio program but the power of the pro-tool app is the plug-ins which are VERY EXPENSIVE. if you have pro-tool but not the high-end plug-ins it is just like have pro-track midi/audio program ($59).

it is nice to say i have pro-tools, cubase sx etc, but the key to purchase/setup up a project studio is to find your workflow and the tools that will grow with you. i think buying cubase sx is a waste because you could do the same thing with cubase se.
