I just put on OS2 actually... you could save work with the free joint, sorry. Have to buy a serial# now though. The buttons on this thing are horrible so I'll need to get the upgrade kit. Either that or midi them out to my mpd24

mcgirt - the pads may be fine, it just may be the sensitivity that needs to be adjusted. akai os2 or JJ 4.99 and up have really good adjustments for the sensitivity, so start there.
i have a black 1k, but with the standard os (or the free JJ) the pads were brutal. buying JJ 4.99 gave me more options, and honestly it's a different box now.
