better saving methods?

You guys are playing with fire by just resaving after that error, I know that it works for the moment, but the more you do it you will start to build up corrupt files on your CF card more and more, then you will start getting SYSTEM ERRORS and missing files, then all hell breaks loose.

Im going to move all the files on my CF to my PC, then reformat the CF Card. And see if that works.

who gives a ****? I have about 30 beats on my cf card, plus copies of them printed in ProTools track by track, and two track mixes of 10 more beats and it still isn't close to being full. I only have a gig cf card too. You should be saving to a folder with a different name every time anyway just in case you get a directory error and your mpc crashes the next second (though that never happens to me).

Here's what I do, I posted this up a bunch of times but I'll just post it again since I have it saved, so we don't have to search... i realized that the error was because the MPC was not "refreshing" the Directories properly, so I started doing it like this:

The method I have for avoiding the saving crashes and the new folder bug involves "refreshing" the directory tree before creating the new folder. I was getting the new folder bug quite frequently, but since I started this "refresh" technique, I have not gotten a single error. Here's what I do:

1. In the SAVE directory tree, I move the cursor to the folder I want to save to and I hit RENAME, then in the RENAME dialog I hit COPY. This step is only so that I don't have to re-enter the individual letters when I get to step 5.

2. Close the RENAME dialog then delete the folder.

3. Close the directory tree. (At this point, if you go back into the directory tree, you will see that, in fact, the folder you just deleted has magically re-appeared as if it had never been deleted. Going back into the tree is not actually a step I take in the saving process, it is simply something strange I noticed when I was originally troubleshooting it.)

4. Here's where the "refresh" comes in... So after closing the directory tree (step 3), you should be back in the main SAVE dialog. Move the cursor up to the field at the top where you select where you want to save (i.e. MEMORY CARD or INTERNAL MEMORY or HARD DISK if you have one). I then change the option to INTERNAL MEMORY, and then I change it back to MEMORY CARD. That's the "refresh". Now the directory tree correctly reports that the folder was, in fact, deleted.

5. I then hit NEW to make a new folder, then in the NEW FOLDER dialog I hit PASTE (since i copied the name of the folder in step 1).

6. Then I SAVE ENTIRE MEMORY to the folder I just re-created.


I'm assuming this method would work for saving to the hard drive too, but I haven't been able to test that since I don't have a hard drive installed.

As far as I can tell, it is the combination of not overwriting, and "refreshing" that has eliminated the error for me. since I have been saving like this I have had ZERO errors. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you.

I would recommend a backup and reformat if you have been having the error a lot because you probably have some corruption already on the disk which could cause additional headaches later.

It's not that much of a hassle... the long post makes it seem worse than it actually is. It's definately better than the corrupt files and disappearing folders I was getting before I discovered that workaround.

This is not ideal but it works for me because at the moment I don't want the be naming my song folder each time i save. I just want to save entire memory into a folder and get some sleep.

I think that's the best way to do it. I've been getting sick of deleting samples and having them still be there when I load the song up...so, if all you need to do is purge them before you save it, that should save having to create a new folder.
