Ableton LIVE 5 and MPC1000

Well done guys, this is the discussion about the combination of these two powerhouses that i was looking for.

I am into using Live as a start for my tracks untill os2 comes...

this is because i have so many drum-hit samples that i use live to preview and select them then drop them into impulse.
I have about 150Gig of samples so i even have to split my kicks/snares etc. to 2 folders or most programs will crash when browsing this ammount of files!

I tried bluethingy which is DAMN GOOD, but it doesnt browse heaps of samples as easily as Live and therefore i would like to be able to start a kit in ableton then get on the mpc.

When os2 comes... the most important feature i am looking for is the browse from disk option...

I will have a 100Gb Toshiba drive (gotta trust the MPC-Man Sparq!!!)
and have my MPC as the starting point for my tracks...

Plus it would be good to screw around with Live and know that you can dump it on the Mpc and jet to your mates place for a session...

Anyone dumping midi clips from LIVE into MPC ?

I have a Program on the MPC that is a MIDI template for Impulse. I use it when I'm using Impulse for the drums and the MPC as a MIDI controller to bang out a quick beat. Like I said, I prefer the sequencer on the MPC, although Live has better editing features. I also have one for EDS-16i (Creamware drumsynth).

Nice move ... Using a template for impulse is a great way to do it.

I was thinking about using Battery to set up beats instead of Impulse and try exporting an akai pgm from that... then maybe import into bluethingy like Sparq does on his recycle video, but I gotta get Battery 2 and i only got 1 at the moment.

Impulse is nice to use because it automatically mutes the drum from the MIDI track when you route it to an audio track. You have to perform this step manually on 3rd party VSTs. Anyway, I spent a little bit of time tonight working with my MPC and Live. Seems I can get a good loop recorded in Live from the MPC if I punch in/out in the middle of it playing instead of from the beginning. It takes a bar or two for everything to sync up. I'm gonna use Sonik Synth 2 to compose some original tunes that sound like old record samples and then add a beat with the MPC. Faux sampling anyone?

Yeah, Live is awsome but my only prob atm is when u drag a drum sample into impulse, the sample comes out all wack and diff from the original sample. Anyone know if theres a default setting to get the original sample as it is when u drag it into impulse.

yo, i got one to. doesnt get much use these days tho (since i brought a laptop)

i actually auctioned it on ebay cos i wasnt using it but the lady's private parts bidder didnt pay, and i got stuck wid ebay fees etc. so i couldnt be fuk'd to resell it. am gonna keep hold of it for now.

i've never used xtc mode, tried setting it up once with Live but it didnt work straight off and i wanted to get on with making music so didnt bother trying to fix it up.

Yes. It works fine once you tweak the ini. There is a bug were the ULLI setting is not saved. You must manually edit /SFP/App/Bin/Cset.ini. Under [XTC-config], add a new entry intBlkSize=x (where x=64, 128, 256, 512, or 1024 which correspond to latencies of 3ms, 4ms, 17ms, 13ms, and 25ms respectively. For example, if your latency is set to 4ms, then you'd add intBlkSize=128 under the [XTC-config] section. The only issue that remains is that I need to re-scan the MIDI device each time I launch Live otherwise Creamware MIDI is disabled -- a small price to pay for using XTC mode. Sorry for going off topic.

even using lives , Operator as a sound module is cool, i really like Operator, sure not as tweakable as some Softsynths but still pretty cool, i like it becase to get ideas i can just record a few midi tracks on the MPC and have them midi,ed up to Operator and mute them till i find 1 or 2 or 3 i like

but yes what a wicked program Live is

live is amazing!
best program i've used with my mpc (in terms of workflow).

i have 4ins and a stereo digital in on my computer, so i have everything on the 1000 connected at once.

digital out of the mpc goes to digital in (for stereo signal).
individual 1000 outs 1-4 go to my audio ins 1-4.


then in ableton i have a live set made where each 1000 out has a seperate track monitoring. i make a beat and route the drums through the individual outs that way i can put individual ableton effects on the drums while just making the beat on the 1000 (but only monitoring through ableton).

so long story short, i can throw ableton effects on top of indivual things while still making the beat in the 1000, rather than dumping stuff into ableton first and trying my luck there.

good lookin on that...i don't even **** with XTC mode anymore, i just route the stuff around in the scope window.

I used to have a pulsarII card but it wouldnt work easily so i dumped it...
Sick of talking about tech stuff and just wanted to make music

So I'm curious, do you do all your arranging with the MIDI clips and Render to Disk? Or do you eventually bounce each track to audio? And if you bounce to audio, do you record each track from beginning to end or do you bounce each clip separately and arrange again? Thanks!

I prefer Midi in the begining for flexibility in structure
(this is very important for synth parameters)
and then audio for mastering -
to get a particular sound for the track.
