PennyDimes wrote:I dont think your idea can help me out much. Im having a huge problem with my sandisk CF card. It was werking fine for a good few months then all of a sudden it slows down the mpc and freezes it up entirely.

I know, check this out... It could be due to corruption that accumulated over time. That is similar to the experience that I had which led me to troubleshoot which led me to the new saving method. I started noticing that folders and files were "disappearing" according to the MPC, but my PC could still see them there. Then I noticed that the PC was reporting that the CF card was full, when it really wasn't even half full. Then my MPC started crashing when I tried to save. After troubleshooting for a couple of weeks, I realized that every time I saved and got the directory error, or sometimes system error, but then just tried again and it worked, I was actually getting file corruption without knowing. At first it didnt seem like an issue, but over time I started to cause problems. That is when I realized that the directory tree, when viewed from the MPC, is not always correct, which was leading to the errors when trying to save (I had deleted the folders, but the MPC still thought they were there, thus the error).

So, anyway, long story short, If I were you, I would backup your card, format it on the MPC (twice or 3 times if you have to), reload all your info, then start using the saving method I posted above. It has solved all my data problems.

Whats the go with the hard drive that you guys install? how is it done and wats the cost??

I'm tryin to grasp the 'refresh' method, I think that could work, I'll prolly give it a try on the next beat, thanks for that idea tbonus.

The deal with my original problem was that while it began saving what I was working on before it froze, it had actually deleted some samples altogether. The reason why is beacuse before it had a chance to overwrite the folder with the new one, it had already began deleting some of the samples before it had a chance to save the new project. Seems like the refresh method could take care of having to overwrite everything each time you save your song....still, Akai should be able to handle that, crashing and freezing just shouldn't be part of the picture...

Ok check this out... I tried to format my CF card in the mpc, and after about 1 minute of freezing up the mpc says "insert card" when clearly its already inserted. So then i try another method... plugging the Cf card into a CF card reader/writer and formatting through my laptop...then it says the cf card cant be formatted. i cant even open the cards files up on the laptop because it just freezes and says the card needs to be formatted , then i click ok, then it says the card cant be formatted.. fustrating as hell!!! How can i fix this CF card or is it totally screwed?? i mean i dont wana be going through CF cards every 2 months because of this, they cost a fortune!!!

Does it happen to be one of those CF cards with a write-protect switch on it? If not, sounds like that card is toasted... did you try running a disk utility program on it like SCANDISK, or some other disk checking program?

By PennyDimes Mon Jun 05, 2006 5:00 am
Nah it doesnt have a write protection switch, its just a 512mb sandisk CF card. im trying to find some disk utility progs now ... ill see if i can sort it out, otehrwise i duno wat im gona do. buy a new CF card every month

I'm currently using a 512 sandisk card, and I haven't had any problems storing yet. I feel like my initial problem when my MP froze was from not having the proper internal memory.

But, so far the sandisk has been fine.

PC or MAC? If it's a PC just try the standard disk checking utility thats in the tools tab of the properties dialog for the disk.

hey Theory, not sure if you're still looking to recover your beat,
but there's data recovery software that might work...
although there's others around here's one from san disk ($40)...

http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Default.aspx?CatID=1186

I haven't tried this one, but have tried similiar things with regular Hard drives. The thing is even though your mpc has deleted the files, I think it just deleted the name from the directory file, so the data should still be on the disk (if you haven't written new data on the card that would've written over the old stuff).

good luck mang!

My 1000 FROZE completely on me while I was saving a beat...
It has never froze on me before, and considering that I only had one option (as far as I know) to restart, I turned it off...I knew I'd lose whatever I had been working on before that save, however.............
everything fom that project was LOST!! all the seqeunces, programs, basically, names were there, but NO SAMPLES. the programs were completely empty. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me there's a way to retrieve that data, considering I've spent months on this one tune as a bside for the new single.

.......thank you

thanks melton..I've got it all back now, after much more work.

*NEW QUESTION*
It's relative to the whole memory issue we were discussing, internal, etc. So what happens when I finish a project, everything saves fine, then when I go to load it it says 'insufficient memory' and won't load all the samples. If the samples recorded fine and saved fine, shouldn't they also load fine?? This has happened with a couple of different beats (namely those with LOTS of samples) and It's pissin me off...Basically, after is says insufficient memory, you can still load up the track, it's just missing like the last few samples you recorded. It shows that they exist in the program, there's just a ?? next to em cuz they clearly didn't load.

???prolly just my internal memory huh.
Nonetheless, any ideas shoot em over, I have a feeling I'm not the only one this happens to, and I'd like to have the beat in it's entirety, no lost samples, just titties.
thx

the "?" means the file isn't loaded into your memory (mpc ram)...
I'm guessing you don't have enough ram to load the entire project, so it hits the end and those samples don't load up.

Whoa, that's weird, so you are saying that while you were making the beat that you had enough RAM to load up all the samples, but after you save it and try to reload it you don't have enough RAM?

I'm thinking that when you are re-loading the saved beat, you must have some other samples still loaded up in your RAM. Either that, or your RAM is acting funny. Are you using SAVE ENTIRE MEMORY and then loading up the .PRJ file?

[NOTE: I currently don't have an mpc1000. But I will soon...]

Anyhow, I was wondering... try 'analyzing' your CF cards with Windows' Disk Defragmenter. If there's mad red sh!t, that means the card's all fukt up, a la corrupt data. If after defragmentation, there exists data that could not be defragmented, that likely means the card is close to being toast.

I don't know what kind of SanDisk cards you (Theory & PennyDimes) have, but I believe this is the highest quality one:

I personally copped this Kingston:

Good luck, everyone.

Yeah, while I'm making the beat I'm able to load all the samples, then after I successfully save it, it won't load them all up again due to 'insufficient memory.' When I go to save a beat, I save entire memory to whatever folder it is, then replace same files in memory. In this case, while it's saving it reads the new samples I just loaded (whichever ones were last) but when I go to open the folder, there wasn't enough memory to load them...?? maybe my rams just had enough, cuz it's not the first beat this had happened with. If I'm looking at an empty machine just being turned on (when I go to load the beat) there's no samples loaded in the machine...maybe, just maybe there's still some presets in the internal I don't know about... *ALSO* When I start a new project, I have, say 1 min 30sec record time, ok? after a couple long samples are recorded, I'm @ about 30 sec rec time. after a few more, I'm literally down to about 10 sec, til eventually (on every beat now) I'm literally left with no record time. This is after I've discarded any unwanted space in trim, and after I've purged any unused samples..again, all this must come back to my ram...yes? I def have about 300mb left on the cf card, that can't be it.

Taken from stereoroid.com:

"2. What are the advantages/disadvantages of CF?

Advantages: CF cards have no moving parts, it takes a lot to damage one in everyday use.
USB CF interfaces are now extremely cheap (< $10), and some PCs now have multi-format card readers installed in a floppy bay. A simple adapter lets it fit in a notebook PC Card slot. The same card can be used in multiple devices, usually without reformatting (if you're careful): digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players. etc.
Disadvantages:
Cost - coming down, but cards are still pretty expensive compared to ZIP.
Limited Life - CF cards eventually wear out, their flash bits can only take so many writes. The figure varies per manufacturer, so check the specs if possible before buying. The card degrades gracefully, with more errors appearing over time (capacity drops gradually, it shouldn't suddenly fail)."
