i'm definitely buying another display before i decide to experiment. thanks for the heads-up, rhythm. i had a feeling it was going to be very much like you described. this project is going to need alot of time and patience, so i'll plan accordingly.

You don't understand it technically. The colour of the display not only depends from the LED's but also from 2 sheets of foil. A spreading one and a colouring one. The actual LED's are yellow instead of green.
It would be experimenting with colours with an uncertain result.
Furthermore the LED's are SMD, so replacing them would be an extremely precise soldering job. To complicate it even more, the LED's are under the glass LCD sheets which connect to the main assembly with small silicon-carbon-stripes. At the slightest dispositioning your display will show artifacts.

cheers for pointing all this out mate. yeah it'll be difficult, but doable. i didn't know about the coloured sheets though, i assumed there was only a diffusion layer. ah well assumptions mean shit when they come from my mouth.
