my dad's a carpenter and i'm pretty handy with tools as well

maybe i could draft him into making wooden sideplates for the mpc.
the only thing i worry about is the grain of the wood - a hit in the wrong place and your sideplate might break right down the middle!

the wooden sideplates wouldn't necessarily be for those who travel with their mpcs

the mpcstuff guy told me they were currently on some of the design presented especially the classic one
this a quote of his email

"We are doing solid colors now. White and Classic Cream will be first you can let everyone on MPC forums know. We have been working on them for a while. Just tryin to get other products out first. First out will be classic style for the 1000 white and cream along with a plain black for the MPC2000XL and 2000"

what are you thinking of using, balsa wood?

I don't think durability would be that big of an issue, you might get some dents and dings in them, but if you used something like oak or even hickory (which is hard as hell) then I don't think any straight up breaking would occur to often.

What's funny though is that balsa is technically considered a hardwood

burr walnut for me.

I'd like to actually make my own custom, but I'm not sure the quality of the custom kits. Anyone get one yet?

You have to be careful and really precise when you stick the skin to your faceplate, the skin has to be really well aligned with the faceplate!

god i hate doing stuff like that id end up making a serious mess and get very stressed

it depends on how thick the wood is, dvs - a wrong knock could really screw you up. especially if it's a straight grain wood, like various pines.

a dense, hard wood like walnut or (shiver) mahogany would look so beautiful if it ws properly stained and treated on a black mpc1000

my dad might get into this idea. i'll order him a spare side and see if he could make a bunch of em and start his own little website

Yeah those were the two woods I was looking at (stained dark). My friends have a woodshop doing high grade furniture, I was going to see if I could get something made but Ive been really busy lately. If the wood was thick enough and esp. if it was quartersawn I wouldn't worry about traveling with it or it breaking (synths have had wooden side panels for years) Burl or quilt might be weaker though.

The wood panels would be easy given that you had some type of metal fixing sliders where it slides on the mpc. The backing of them could almost be nearly flat. A wooden front panel for the 2000XL would be pretty bad ass too.

A nice burl walnut or pippy oak olive ash the list goes on (something with character)

If anybodys up to it how about using veneers

when I said hickory what I meant was walnut (I thought hickory sounded wrong as I was writing it). I worked in a cabinet shop before and the walnut was f**ckin murder on our pocket drill machine -- super hard stuff
