I also use the Korg R3 as a MIDI controller for the MPC 1000 and they work really well together.
On a side note, the R3 is really nice just for sound design with the MPC. You can create a sound on the R3, sample it to the MPC, run the sound out of the MPC and back into the R3 to do more filtering and effects, and just keep doing that over and over to get some pretty sick sounds. The effects on the R3 are better than the effects on the MPC... so a lot of times I will run a dry sample I have on the MPC through the R3, and resample that, just for the effects processor on the R3.
