Yo I was thinking of the same thing after I read this thread, that would be very nice for being able to quickly connect to the PC with faster USB 2.0 speeds for large file transfers, and with an external power cord you could probably even get it to use a 3.5" hard drive if you really wanted

i really like that idea man!!!

here is a quick sketch i done on ms paint....

i'm no artist by the way.... :P :D

now surely this is possible, all we need is somebody with a lot of computer technology knowledge. (cough!) Nym (cough!)

if this ever worked it would be dope as fuk!

maybe that would work if it was just one USB port, but I doubt you could get more than one working

I was thinking more along the lines of just extending that internal connection to the front of the metal plate with and IDE cable, which you could then use to connect to a hard drive that is sitting on your desk

when you needed to do large transfers you could unplug the IDE cable and plug the hard drive into an IDE-to-USB adapter and have USB 2.0 speeds from the hard drive to your PC

(Unfortunately the drive would probably not be hot-swappable without doing some kind of damage, and you would most likely have to turn off the MPC before disconnecting)

I imagine that would be far less technically involved as it only involves extending the connection with a cable -- the IDE for the laptop size hard drive being a standard connection already, etc.

The 2.5" drive uses less power than a 3.5" one though, and the power is carried over the same cable as the data I think, so you would need a little bit of modification I think to use a 3.5" hard drive (but not much) and an external power supply for the drive, but I think it would be do-able.

You'd have a kind of weird Frankenstein looking MPC though having cables and shit poking out everywhere

i think something of this nature should be the nxt big project for all mpc-forum users who are interested in it. getting peoples ideas and contributions could help move it along, i mean i think its do-able too.

the basics are there i think for us to start trying to produce this, i did electrical engineering for a while and i'm goin to have a stab at it.

i will keep you posted.

suggestion... if you want a swappable hard drive, you could just connect an IDE-cable to hdm10 and have the hard drive hang outside the mpc... but don't really see a point there... so forget it

edit: you'd prolly need an extra cable/converter for the IDE to fit into hdm10...

yes but they make them and they are pretty cheap

you just need a 44pin to 40pin adapter

and swappable, yes - hot swappable is a whole other thing entirely
meaning swapped while 'hot' or swapped while the power is on

what I'm wondering though is what the limitations are of whatever the IDE controller is inside of the MPC. IDE by specification is usually meant to be able to handle two drives per channel, one as master and one as slave.

If the controller is capable of this, than it may be possible to keep a hard drive internal, but add a media card reader or some USB or something to as slave. I don't konw if they make any USB-to-IDE converters though and you would have to have some sort of support from JJ for allowing those sources to be selected from the load screen.

The external, swappable drive thing though is almost definitely very doable.

If you just used the same laptop size hard drive, all you'd really need is a cable to extend the connection, one end male one female

If you wanted to use 3.5" hard drives that is where the adapter would come in and you would also very likely need an external power source (which you could rip off a USB enclosure)

the point, by the way, is that it would make it slightly faster for making large file tranfers from PC to hard drive

I think ideally, if possible, it would be best to keep everythign internal, but somehow split the connection off so that the hard drive inside is connected both to the MPC and to an internally mounted USB 2.0 adapter

don't know if this is possible though, it seems like it probably wouldnt be

dvs homie whats good?

i must say you have some pretty heads-up ideas man, i think its excellent.

what do you think about starting a thread on here for people to put their technological ideas forward to try and get this idea off the ground?

i see what you are saying, that some options are technically do-able and some aren't, but if we get alot of people who are interested on the same mind frame for actually making one of these, it could be another amazing development for the mpc-1000.

i'm sure jj will help with any os programming issues.

29 euros my youth!!

yeah, it's an awful lot money there... but hey! Think about it! Once you start making bangin' beatz™ with that HDM10-thingy, you'll be getting that money back TIMES TEN BILLION!!!11 EURODOLLARS!!1
