when i first started this thread, i expected to just see people say that hacking the os was going to be impossible. but just looking at how much progress has been made infowise in the last couple posts, it makes me glad to see that people even took the time to try.

any information is good info.

well if anyone keeps poking around in their 1000 please keep posting. i'm sure lots of us would like to know what ever info you stumble across.

ohh, and respect to evilpaul for diving into his 1000 and attempting to change stuff around.

here's a summary of info from the most relevant posts....

------------------------------------
stereoroid:
I took a shot of the CPU , it's on my "inside" web page, and I found a link to a page on it: http://www.renesas.com/fmwk.jsp?cnt=sh7 ... 727_group/

That has a "software and tools" page, with links to some downloadables, including a compiler/simulator/debugger at http://download.renesas.com/eng/mpumcu/ ... index.html

--------------------------------------------------
jksuperstar:
Like I said, the tools can be free. Just build a cross-compile version of GCC for the SH-3 (see http://gcc.gnu.org for details). Full support for that chip, including the DSP extensions it has. The SuperH processors are one of THE most popular embedded processors out there. It is not Akai specific, and there are plenty of free software tools for it.

Even with a team of capable minds, it could take months to reverse engineer anything useful out of the existing OS. I have seen that done, but the skills required to do that type of work are worth 6 digit salaries and it seems unlikely that someone would spend that amount of time on a unpaying project (I love the MPC's but I love to feed me and my family more). One may write one from scratch, which has been done to some degree, but again even there other issues that even complicate this matter (like how to address the interfaced components such as the display and the buttons).

How do we know that the MPC1000 is not already running Linux?

Im with the coders on this too... As we seen here... punchdrunk thought nothing would come of this thread, ideas got thrown around n things started snowballing... keep the ball rolling and who knows..

i do think however the people on this forum are the wrong people to reach.. at the end of the day we're music producers using mpc, not making them... got any geeky friends? get em involved... :D

sure we are MPC users, but we are NOT the wrong people to talk about improvements, because ideas come from usage, not from "geeks".

And btw, another thread in this very same forum reports that according to Keyboard magazine in Germany, Akai announced a forthcoming OS upgrade for the mpc1000 that will include timestretch, so we are not that wrong with our wishes...

" got any geeky friends? get em involved... "

I do, but they get three digit salaries to do this type of work (like mentioned already). Your best bet is to find someone that is already an MPC fan that is willing to donate their time since it would be non-paying work. Most software for most pieces of gear are written by users of the equipment themselves.

Im needing Zoning!

with this in mind thought I would revisit this and bump it UP!

Ive always been a fan of the saying: if you can make it...you can break it..

is any one active on hacker forums? maybe you could post a question about decompiling or reverse enginnering the MPC OS as a challenge / or ask if its possible ..show em the file.

then again we could attempt to bribe the developers in japan wish some geisha's??

thoughts?

Anybody have an idea on the exact coding used to create the MPC 1Ks O.S.?
