I'd avoid it if it aint official cause this is one of those things that can RUIN your whole machine FOR GOOD, no matter how much you wanna hot rod it.

it's exciting in the long run because there are examples from history where 3rd-party OS's have dropped and given machines a new life...
(what's the machine I'm thinking of, it wasn't the asr-10 was it? something like that... the OS gave it a bunch of xtra filters and effects)
Not, the ASR10, some other machine you are thinking aobut.
I think its really cool when people out there take the time to hot rod their machines, whether hardware or software, especially if it does good things to the sound instead of screw it up.
Not talking about sound, I'm talking about possibly messing up your hardware to the point where you can't make beats anymore.
Anyway, yeah this thread has been done before, so I should shut up now...Nah, your good, you made good points. Hot rodding is one thing but messing with an unofficial OS is another. That's one of those things like I said that can become MAJOR real quick.

I used to own an yamaha tx16w the owner of route 66 studios traded me. I came with os 1,2, typhoon and typhoon 2000. The typhoon os made the yamaha look sorry as hell. I still wish i haven't sold it!

Autechre commissioned a guy to develop a new OS for their eps16+ many years ago. Great piece of kit and my first taste of sampling.

if the mention of osv2 never existed, people would be all over this... admit it.

The mpc1000 is a computer. The chances of software (3rd party or whoever's) messing up the hardware is very slim. The idea that someone's hacked os will kill the machine is not a very smart one.

Loading Linux instead of Windows wont damage my PC, and neither will some OS hack for the mpc1000.

If some cats want to experiment, then let them do it without all of the BS doomsday predictions.[/b]

i think the issue is the question of will you be able to go back to 1.07 or ahead to 2.0 after installing this third party os.

however, i'm thrilled by the possibility of third party os's. i say keep em coming. hack the hell out of the 1k os, if at all possible. i want to see what people can do.

I'm a big fan of linux, and open source. But I find very suspicious the guy haven't made his code available.
And as far as hardware is concerned there are examples where bad code damaged hardware. In some C book, there's an example of that possibility to literally burn the monitor with bad code ( coz of the kernel).
We know nothing bout the kernel of the 1k, I don't even know what kind of chip it has. We don't know anything about that "alternative os". I'd go with lampdog, and I'd be careful. I'm happy some peepz run their iPod with linux, but the code is available for review and that makes a great difference. Patience is some great virtue.

actually, its nothing like a PC.
if you **** up a bios flash on an mpc, you cant crack it open and put in a boot floppy, no, you've **** it, send it off to akai and get it fixed

i wasn't going to chime in on this thread because i spoke my peace on this topic the last time it was brought up.

I WOULD NOT UTILIZE THE "ALTERNATIVE" OS ON MY 1K first of all, i'm not scared of messing up my 1k. i am very adapt at electronic engineering and computer hardware. i wouldn't do it because it was not approved. some of you may be lucky to have installed that os with no problem but that's not to say that it would work for everyone. if something happened while using that os, it could.... no it would void your warranty with akai. there is no one to give you support. and bad software CAN f*ck up hardware. it's been done (not with mpc's but rather with a PC) there is no one on this board to be able to give you help if something happened to your mpc while using that os.

is it worth it?????? NO but hey, i didn't buy your mpc for you so if you want to take a chance and screw it up, it's no money loss to me. but be warned and i did not say to do it.

Examples of what I was getting at ALL along.
I'm not saying bad things WILL happen BUT always look both ways before crossing the street IF you REALLY need to cross the street in the first place.

Just because I don't like to state something without some strong back up, short quote:
"The original IBM PC monitor operated at a horizontal scan rate provided by the video
controller chip. The flyback transformer (the gadget that produces the high voltage needed
to accelerate the electrons to light up the phosphors on the monitor) relied on this being a
reasonable frequency. However, it was possible, in software, to set the video chip scan rate
to zero, thus feeding a constant voltage into the primary side of the transformer. It then
acted as a resistor, and dissipated its power as heat rather than transforming it up onto the
screen. This burned the monitor out in seconds. Voilà: undefined software behavior causes
system meltdown! "
This comes from "Expert C programming - Deep C secrets"by Peter Van Linden.
Do watcha want but be aware, sh1ts do happen.
And remember, mpc wasn't meant to support 3rd party soft so it's probably not that developper friendly.

I agree... hacked software may crash your computer, but you can always reinstall windows... the same holds true for the MPC... I dont understand why people would think you cant go back to Akai's OS... if you boot the machine from akai OS, you will be in Akai OS, and vice versa. That said, the "alternative OS" doesnt seem worth all the hype, so I wont be trying it. As for the hardware getting damaged, it's one thing if you are talking about a computer monitor, but i don't see any components in the MPC that could be damaged by different code.

boom, that's what im talking about. i don't think typhoon is the only example either, I'm still thinking on what that other famous 3rd party os was...

Point is there is an illustrious history of people making _really good_ alternative os's that in some cases became the industry standard for a machine. It's a good thing for all of us if we cultivate an attitude of 'yeah cool' and 'you go' for anyone who wants to put in the hard work and take our machines to the next level. (sometimes for free)

otoh, trying this stuff is very 'do at your own risk'.. i wouldn't expect anyone to bail me out if i f***d my machine that way.

also, akai probably saved me the trouble in this case. in the final analysis it was real time pitch/filter i was hoping for, and they got it in there, so im not feeling the need for anything beyond akaiosv2.0.

anyway its cool that everyone has kept this discussion respectful, its nice when we can all agree to have our own opinions
