ATTACK & DECAY Only work if you use .PRG kits (on the mpc 1000).

if you just load .Wavs onto the pads, you cannot apply Attak n Decay.

Save your assigned samples as Programs, then you should have no issues with Attack and Decay, High Pass, Low Pass, Band Pass, etc.

"I've got a Nord Modular that I modeled the Akai filter in"

But the nord doesn't really sound much like an anaologue filter IMHO, plus the midi capablities of the MFC42 are really great - the way you can so easily controll the unit from an MPC or send a sysex message from within the sequence makes the MFC really flexible.

I love the nord but its not the same deal at all

I've added MIDI control to the patch, and the nord can send snapshots of all the knobs, so the sequencing is covered. I'd disagree about the analogue sound...I've come across some nice models that add non-linear distortion the way analogue filters do when peaked(if you've got a nord or us reaktor, check http://www.code404.com/)...it's not based on the default filters in the nord by any means...but beyond that there's a billion more filters that I can use to replace the usual lo-pass(vocoders, vocal filters, etc) so in that regard, it's more flexible.

What do you mean? I've never had trouble tweaking attack and decay of the amp on a sample after simply loading a wav. Same goes for filters of all kinds.

My official review -

The MPC1000 is tight! It's nice and compact and sounds (IMO) better than the 2000xl - Since I used to have the 2000xl getting back in the swing of things took less than 1/2 hour - I've been up all weekend writing...

The only reason I'm posting right now is because I'm at work (shoot, I wish I could take that little bad boy on the bus) anywayz...

It sounds great!

It has a real nice swing to it for techno (believe it or not)!

For the way I work (outboard sound modules and efx) it's a god send - funny how things work...I sold my 2000xl to buy a G4, then turned back around and got hooked up on a MPC again - Funny how things work!

All I can say is, after having the 2 to compare the 1000 takes the cake - OFF THA HOOK!

Only complaint is the CF issues which I have faith will be fixed by Akai - After going out and picking up a CF reader / writer every once in a while when I try to transfer a .wav to the MPC1000 desktop icon my computer freezes up (Boooo)

...and the MPC wont recognize my Pro-Toolz .wav's (I prefer to work in Pro-toolz rather than Logic so that's a major BOOOO)

those things are minor in comparison to how chunky the 1000 is and with time that kind of stuff will get worked out (I have faith)

Plus I got a free bag on the way - PEACE!

This is my first MPC & experience with these machines. I've owned one for a few weeks. Was happy at first and now seriously thinking about getting a MPC4000.

It's missing out on a few things like manual quantise for example. That's not the end of the world (found a way round that by using copy/paste in Step Edit). My main issue is syncing it with my Logic.
It plays back my sequence differently when slaving from Logic to when I play it independantly. Not an amazingly huge diffence, but enough to notice & be annoyed by, because the groove hasn't got the same feel anymore.

I spoke to tek support at Akai & Emagic who both never came across the problem. I might be wrong but I reckon it's to do with the fact that the 1k only accepts midi clock & not SMPTE or even MTC, which are more accurate when it comes to syncing (which isn't even an option on the 1k).
The MPC4000 has these as standard aswell as loads of other appealing functions I think will benefit me.

I thought a basic MPC would suit me since Logic & other gear does most of what I need but after really getting into the MPC's (which I think are great) I find that the 1000 has missed out just a few features too many. :(

ime in the UK too.

i use Logic Audio Platinum 6 on a G4 Mac (osx 10.2.6)

i use the MPC 1000 for beats only...but the absence of 'Shift Timing' really pead me off.

as for the syncing option, i don't bother.

the MTC is what you are looking for. forget what emagic said, they'll deny anything when it comes to other 3rd party products.

however ime going to the Sounds Expo and ime going to speak to both Arbiter (Akai UK) and Emagic about this in person. i want to request arbiter for the Shift timing feature.

the current way ime syncin my beats:

Record the MPC 1000 drums (mainly 4 bar) to Logic Audio, then bounce the audio again to a .wav file.

take the .wav drum beat to Recycle 2 (on my PC), and then loop it perfectly and re-export as a .wav again.

this to me is way better then spending extra £700 on an MPC4000, and way better than using any form of midi syncing (be it midi clock or MTC), coz even then they are not entirely accurate.

coz you are a logic user too, i respect you, and you may be aware that Logic's powerful matrix editor spots any timing irregularities.

midi syncing always has these slight out of time issues. you will also loose the precise feel the mpc has.

the best way is to do it like the way i am. i also have the option to sync the mpc beats via digital coaxial method straight to my pioneer deck (its a slight process but also worthit).

so, i have found ways around this syncin issue, and i think you may want to consider this.

my main gripe is shift timing...i want it as a stand alone feature, like set out on previous mpcs, i.e. Earlier & Later / Amount.

midi timing is tight for me.. I don't lose the feel of my tracks. Maybe it's the 96ppqn ;)

Hi Roopesh,

You're up at stupid o'clock like me!! I thought I was bad.
Listen man, I've just sent you a PM about this syncing problem but you've replied to this thread already, so just ignore it.

Thanks for your advice man, really appreciate that. Gonna put some of this into practice. Sounds a bit long but I'll give it a go.

Going to the Sounds Expo on Wednesday actually.

It's great to talk to & be around people who know their sh!t - I have lots of admiration for them.

I come from more a writer/producer background as opposed to an engineering one & always keen to learn more, especially as my mixdowns are a bit hit & miss (not as much as before mind).

I've come from the UK-G scene & doing a lot more pop writing & urban projects, including Hip Hop, hence why I got recommended the MPC's which I think are wicked. I can express myself so easily on the pads & I love the feel of the quantisation on these things, that's why I got so vex after I discovered the syncing problems. Goodness me, is that the time - I better catch some ZZzzzzzz.

Thanks again Roopesh

I think going into Recycle etc doesn't suit me, Roopesh. What I'm doing at the moment is recording individual drum sounds thru an outboard compressor into Logic on separate tracks. I only do this once I've finished the song & mixing the track. I want to hear the feel of the MPC while I'm working & need to be able to make changes to the drum pattern as & when I need to. If I have the finished loop that I've done thru Recycle/wav. etc and want to make some changes to the pattern then I have to repeat this process again.

I'm still gonna try out the MPC4000 (which cuts no features back). I would go for the 2kXL if it was USB. SMPTE is more accurate than Midi Clock & MTC so I'm curious to see how the 4k performs when slaving to Logic.

Just wondered how Logic detects timing irregularities if it's only sending OUT a sync message & not 'seeing' what's coming in from the MPC to know what to correct. (Please explain) If this is the case, surely we could disable this somehow. I know someone who owns a 2k (not XL)and slaves it to Digital Performer & has no problems with syncing which I find interesting. Gonna ask him if he's using MTC or what.

Cheers

Havent tried to sync the 1k to logic or protools yet but other then that[if this is a problem] the 1k is HOT mos def! I was thinkin bout coppin the 4k or the mv8k at one time as well just like my_yoot and roopesh but my MPC 1000 and the Motif ES 6 will get the job done for me mos def! A nice duo fo sho. Has anybody else had sync probz wit the 1k sync to logic, cubase, or protools? Holla at me

interesting with the sync problems...i haven't had any. for those who do...i wonder if the mpc is sitting down a midi chain ? i find that can screw things up...i've compared the timing when synced to logic on my mac and when used as the master, and i don't notice any difference.

i have to say that i'm quite liking the mpc...had it for a week and a half...i find i'm using it more than logic...i like the fact that i can set up a loop in logic, digitally dump it to the mpc, and then mash it...been doing this with absynth, reaktor, field recordings...

i bought this thing mostly to do live stuff, but i'm finding that it's a tight little stand-alone ting...i was a bit sceptical about this 'replaces a laptop' claim, but...ya, maybe...

I have never operated a MPC before owning my new MPC 1000, which I have only had for a few days now.

Ease of Use: Very easy to operate. I have found everything to very intuitive, though I have yet to take advantage of every feature, obviously. The sampling, editing/mixing, sequencing, and saving functions are very straightforward, though. I was having fun in just a few hours.

Features: For what I do, amazing. I do a lot of my work pre-sampling on my synths in preparation for making samples work smoothly. I have found the timing when synching my synths to the MPC as slaves to be perfect, and have thus not regretted not having timestretch. I DO hope that if real-time filter sweeps aren't possible (havent gotten it yet myself) that they will address it in a future OS. As it stands now, I just use my ms2000's filters and resample... a few more steps than I would like, but oh well.

I like the price vs. performance value mostly. Not having much money to throw at a production "hub", I opted for the 1000. I don't regret it a bit. The extra RAM means that I am not restricted in my sampling capabilities, and can almost use it like a recorder. Since my setup involves no PC and only basic mixing capabilities, I needed a low rent alternative to song production, and for the price I'd say the 1000 is the best gear purchase I have ever made.
