Thanks x & Nym... I'll dive into JJ head first then - most likely OS1 4.9x. Not sure if this has been asked but is the learning curve hard with JJ and can I still refer to the supplied users manual (for AkaiOS) to work out things on JJ? As stated I've never used an MPC before.

The learning curve with the JJ OS 3.08 FREE version is easy, as most of the functions havent been altered much from the Akai OS. However, I still advise you to read the instructions on JJ's site as a supplement to the Akai manual.
I have a sticky topic in the MPC1000 JJ OS forum written specifically for version 3.08, that provides all the important links.
Spend some time mastering the FREE version 3.08 before you move on.

The learning curve on JJ OS1 4.xx is more advanced, as there are alot of changes. Many of those additions put certain functions in different locations. This is even more present in JJ OS2.
In the MPC1000 JJ OS forum, you will find more sticky topics that are essential to read. Stan Steez has a JJ OS FAQ sticky topic, as well as a manual that he's written (found in Tutor's sticky topic).
Read everything before posting a question that's most likely been answered over there, and spend alot of hands-on experimenting with all that's been shared among the community. You'll find it more rewarding when you do.

cheers for the reply... i'll take your advice and go for the free 3.08 version first to get my hands wet and learn the machine as much as possible. i'll continue to lurk on the JJ OS forum also - don't think i've read this much in years! so much to take in.

Just bought one yesterday. Came with silver bottom but 128mb black card and i have just tried this pad thing and the bottom left pad came out very easily. Is my an old one? An old new one or a new one but not too much since it's got the silver bottom??

they all have silver bottoms

check the rear panel, is it black?

if it is then u have the new one.

I rang up Akai to check when mine was manufactured as it has all the features of a new model except the rear panel is still silver. They said it is one of the first 250 in that case, to feature the new pads, paint job and akai fx compact flash card... how random!

Where did you buy it from?

Soundcontrol who ordered it direct from Akai after there was a shortage throughout the UK.

private seller who had it as a gift but didn't need it so brand new

i got mine in october where it had the new bk box, 128 mem, orange qlink paint, black back panel etc so i opened it the other day and deffintley not the new pads weird it has everything except that so dont get ya hopes up because ya have the black back panel if you want to check it heres a video that shows how to open up the 1k its real easy
