however couldn't you just hook up an mpd16 to the midi input and assign the pads to the correct midi notes and forget even touching the 1000 pads all together? I mean it is not quite the same but it might save some effort.

can't do this because of the mode functions - these are tied to the pads.

i finished the working model the other day and tried turning it on - fail. no power. rechecked the connections - no power. uncovered the power section of the internals - black mark on one of the pieces that i am not familiar with. clearly something burned out - probably a bad wiring somewhere or other. now i have to source the part that i toasted, order several new ones, replace it (while wearing gloves - i've never touched anything in the power section of the mpc) and see if it happens again after i recheck my sh!t.

i probably have a screw touching something somewhere or i soldered a cable to the wrong terminals - dunno. there's LOTS AND LOTS of places where i could have messed up, and it's possible even that it's an issue of cable length/thickness. i really don't know that much about electronics!!

so this project is gonna drag on...and on...all i want is that it's done before i apply to mills/berkeley
i'm very surprised that i wasn't furious with myself. i mean, i figured it wasn't gonna be as easy as "power on, there we go" but at the same time, i wasn't pissed at all. i think that after a solid week of working all day on this hardware sh!t, i was a little relieved that i could just put it away for the weekend.

edit3, i'm borrowing katie's camera this week (it's one of them pink lumix ones, needless to say i won't be leaving the apartment with it) and i'll take pictures of everything, hoping maybe that some of you guys can spot a mistake or something. it'll be good to have you see the progress, too, though at this point it's not too pretty - but it will be (and by pretty i mean it'll look the way i like things to look - steampunk meets voodoo)

the fuses are extremely easy to get and very cheap. what i plan to do is buy like 5 fuses (might as well have em around, and i'll return those i don't blow) and start the mpc up with no boards attached - left op (tact switch), right op (buttons/wheel), pads, headphone/cf, hdm10, or screen to see if it loads...if the fuse blows, i'll figure there's something wrong...or i'll figure that the screen must be connected when the machine is powered on.

if the fuse doesn't blow and the mpc turns on as expected, then i'll just start attaching pieces 1 by one and wait until the fuse blows again - that way i'll source the problem.

hopefully this won't be as hard as i originally thought. it looks like it won't - the ease of getting the fuse takes a lot of the pressure off.
