Warranties can be tricky (I worked at a repair shop).
Typical qualifications for warranty work (Akai may be a little different):
1) Must be purchased new from an authorized dealer.
2) Must be the first owner (i.e. used items, even from an authorized dealer, do not qualify).
3) Must not have been voided by end-user (i.e. spilling drinks on it, dropping it, dropping stuff on it, modifications). Warranties do not cover clusiness or accidents. Only manufacturer defects.
4) You should register your product with the manufacturer. It is not always required, but some manufacturers will deny warranty work without this. Many shops, for certain brands, will call up the manufacturer to see if the product was registered and qualifies.
Some leeway is granted to the repair shop in determining warranty coverage:
1) A repair shop is allowed to not honor warranty work. They can do this for several reasons not worth explaining here. They can charge you a regular service rate. They should tell you this before actually repairing it.
2) A repair shop does take all the financial risk is performing warranty work. They do the work free of charge to you and then file the paperwork. If the manufacturer denies the warranty then the shop lost money.
As far as retailers (worked at one of them too):
1) Retailers are not required to exchange a defective item. Some retailers do have a policy on exchange, but this is not required.
2) A good rule to follow is to completely test the equipment before discarding the packing or filing the reqistration. Having all packing and orignal papers in the box makes it much easier for the retailer to accept the return/exchange.
3) You can call most manufacturers to determine if someone is an authorized dealer.
