Vocal samples

Other than vinyl, where do most people find vocal samples? I'm looking to find dialogue, people talking, quoting, fighting etc, to sample.

Additionally, could anyone who samples from digital cable tv describe how they do so?

I use the mpc 1000 w/ a sony laptop w/ a PC - Compact Flash Card.

hands down the best source for dialogue is a short-wave radio. you can pick up a cheap one that has headphone outs, and connect directly to the in of the MPC.

Since it's shortwave, it picks up stuff from ALL OVER the world. I have mandarin language lessons, arabic speaches, south african celebrations, you name it. And tons of news broadcasts...any given night you can take your pick on good or bad news...

There are some people that 'play' SW radio's in their live sets.

ya ! shortwave is kind of like a lo-tech internet...weirder in a lot of ways, actually.

also a good source for strange electronic sounds...data packets, numbers stations, scrambled military broadcasts...

i went through a bit of a phase of sampling people off of Yahoo chat rooms,
either dumb-ass rednecks spouting christian fundamentalist rubbish or
bizarre teenage conversations... kinda felt a bit guilty knowing these people
were being commited to vinyl never knowing about it!!! but the radio is also
great - i bought a digital one just to get clean as ice samples off it



also use girlfriend - we do music together and I often chop her vocals up to get interesting
rythmnic hits...

I'm looking at a Grundig, would people recommend that brand of shortwave radio?

True. But at leat in the radio world, if the power is there, and the antenea in good shape, it'll either work, or it won't. Outside of that, you just get to move around for better reception.

Mine was $10 at a discount store...and I do most of my recording from the basement!

I'm concerned the buildings of Manhattan will hinder the reception, and b/c of that, maybe a stronger frequency model would be more effective to sample off of

I also use 8-tracks, you can find pretty original ish on those tapes.
