all right - this is it, please help.

well, i've spent many hours in this forum and am very seriously considering buying an MPC. here's the deal, GC has no payments/iterest for a year w/ their credit card (which i happen to have). the problem is that the deal ends this week. i would much prefer to pay it off over a year so i want to make a decision now.
i think im goin w/ an MPC1k based on the fact that it is the least expensive model (purchased new) and that despite many differences it is based on the classic MPC sequencer/sampler.
i just want to clear a few specific things first w/ you guys:
- using it w/ a PC: you can transfer samples and files between the 1k and the PC. so you can store stuff you're not using on the PC. that's what it sounds like to me - i just want to clarify. and...
- is the memory upgrade worth getting, i'll be paying it off over a year so i figure i might as well.
also to consider in your replies:
i've never owned an MPC. i currently have a decent studio including a keyboard, multi-track, effects and what not.
general comments are welcome as well.

i hope i don't get shit on for this post, but i need expert info quick. i want to make a smart purchase.

you are correct.

whether or not it is worth it really depends on the user. i havent needed it so far but i did come awfully close today.

all the extra RAM does is get you mroe sampling time. i.e., you ca use more samples or longer samples with the xtra RAM.

$110 is a rip off for such a small amount of RAM to me. but if i needed it i would buy it in a second.

here's what an mpc has that no DAW ive ever use had:

-pads are like playing drums, much different than playing keys on a keyboard
-dope mpc sequencer, yes even on the 1k the feel is sooo good
-the bottom end on this thing is REDICULOUS. thick tight huge bottom end. sounds nice doesnt it

for me (a person who runs a DAW based studio full time) it is a very worthwhile addition

it hasnt paid for itself yet but it's definitely getting there

Buy it - I do go back and forth betweem the MPC1000 and Logic 6 - like if I don't touch the 1000 for a day I start to wonder why I ever bought it, then there's days I spend 25 outta 24 hours on it - it's the bomb!!! and I bet it'll be a classic before not to long

well, called GC, they only got one in a box (i think he might be bull shittin, but wtf.) i think i'll go pick it up after work. i'll post my thoughts...if i can pull myself away from the mpc.

The biggest complaints about the MPC1000 relate to backwards compatibility with MPC2000XL and earlier. For example, you can't attach a CD-ROM drive to load up Akai CDs or rip directly. I don't have such issues, I'm almost starting off from scratch with physical hardware (as opposed to virtual instruments) - it's just me, the notebook PC, MPC1000, Kawai K5000S, FX and mixer.

One little point people overlook here sometimes: The USB -> CF connection is a convenience, but don't have to use it. If you have a PC/MAC with a CF reader, you can swap cards back and forth like floppies at any time, even in the middle of a sequence. Entering MPC's USB mode means stopping everything, which is a pain I don't bother with, since I use a CF adaptor in my notebook PC.
