Multi-track sequence---recording mute perfomance?

Anyone have any tips on easier ways to program a song?
Most of the songs I'm programming use a single sequence I which I unmute/mute tracks throughout the song. Is there a way to record this performance live?
My current method is a real pain....I'll take my sequence, then copy it multiple times and save each copy with different tracks muted. I'll then take these (main loop, main w/shaker, breakdown, backbeat, etc) and go into song mode and sequence them. It takes about 20 times longer than it does to do it live and I now need my hands to play keyboard stuff.
There's gotta a be an easier way than this. Can the MPC record live "playing" of the sequence?

Just bumping this, someone's gotta have some tips for me.

I find it easiest to put a song together by just coming up with a 2 or 4 bar loop, then dropping stuff in and out, hip-hop style I guess...sometimes I want to mute the kick for half a bar, or something else for only a quarter bar. Basically what I'm looking to do is something like the "convert song to sequence" feature, except instead of programming the song in step mode, rolling the sequence live w/mutes and unmutes, then saving the output to a new longer sequence.
Is this possible? I don't want to resample the output to an audio file, simply capture the performance data.

Oh, and the other downside of how I'm doing it now (see my orig post) is that I end up with 10 or so sequences that are all actually the same sequence with different mute info. Kind of a waste of sequence slots in RAM...

yo, pulse! I just stumbled upon this same question... this was possible with my 4k, iirc... but doesn not seem to be so with the 1k...

same same, i do the same thing. i wanna programme a set of sequences as a song and mute stuff in and out with the sequences but it don't seem possible. plus i need to play synth on top and tweak a distorted snare sound... if only I had more arms

i think yall might just have to burn to a cd live while doin ya muting stuff. I dont think you can record that info in a sequence

nah... i'm happy muting tracks in and out within a sequence live.... but it would be nice if u could prearrange the sequences to play in order (eg using the Song function) AND still go back to the track mute screen.

Convert your song to a sequence. You can use the mixer output switches (in mixer mode) as mutes by sending a pad to an output you don't use. [/b]
