Track mute in song mode??

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how you can utilize the track mute (TM) function while playing back in song mode. I thought it would be as simple as playing the song then pressing TM, but instead it just loops the sequence it was playing when I pressed TM. Seems odd. Does anyone have the answer? I don't want to program all my mutes in the sequence beforehand. BTW, I'm on a non-JJOS MPC1000. Thanks

I THINK you have to take the song and convert it to sequences then you can do that. I could be wrong tho.
