need help with MIDI

hey whats up, I'm new to this. I'm having problems with connecting my mpc 1000 to my yamaha mm6 and making them work together thru MIDI. I want the mpc to record what I'm playing on the keyboard. I've tired and the mpc won't pick up what i'm playing. Do I need a mixer for this? please help.

I don't own either pieces of gear but MID is MIDI. I'm sure you no to connect. the cables properly:

mpc midi out >>mm6 midi in
mm6 midi in>>>mpc in

Midi Menu tab on MPC(Master)OUT-on...sending signal out

Midi Tab/menu on mm6(Slave)IN/RCV-on...rcv signal in

you should be able to figure out that you musty also be on the same midi channel for both instruments. Midi channel 1 on MPC and Midi channel 1 on MM6. This way, when you press pads on the MPC, it should now trigger the MM6 sounds! Got it? Get it?! Good!!!
