Would you get a Hard Drive for the 1000?

That is if one comes out! I have heard speculation that AKAI is planning to drop an internal Hard Drive for the 1000, or something to that effect. Would you cop it if they did?

I would get one for sure. I wonder if its true.

I do not understand how a harddrive would be hooked up to an mpc1000.

Please enlighten me.

There is a white connector below where you put the expansion RAM (Check your access panel at the bottom of the machine)

I really do hope they release a hard drive, I know I would find it useful. Maybe if they don't someone else could figure out how to hook one up anyway.

Where is everyone getting the information about the hard drive from? I know there is an expansion bay inside that would fit one (there is a post where a forum member dismantled his 1000 and you could see where a hard drive would go, plus the expansion port by the memory) Someone said that Forat was close to having one working or something and now Akai might drop it? Akai doesn't post this stuff on their website.

Yes I would. I hate have having to plug the USB in, then transfer files, then disconnect. It really slows down my momentum everytime!

You have to hang around alot and read alot, that's how you get to the best informations.

Also, I'm not 100% it is designed only for a harddrive, maybe Akai was trying to predict thefuture and left an emty space in case a new type of portable media comes out.

You don't have to do that if you attach a CF card reader to your computer.

The HDD connector I saw is not the white one next to the memory slot - dunno what that one is - but internally, at the end of a metal chassis that looks exactly like a 2.5" drive mounting bracket. It has screwholes in the right places, but the connector is non-standard, doesn't match my old 6GB or new 30GB 2.5" drives... let me take some pictures this weekend, to post Monday.

Just my guess, but if you notice on the front of the MPC there is a seperate panel thet the CF card reader is in. There seems to be plenty of space for another drive of some sort. I haven't taken my 1K apart yet, but I would guess that the space that is open inside lines up with the available space on the front plate.

Yes, I would get it. I have a large library, and it'd be nice to travel without a PC, or have to buy 20 cards to hold it all!

Also, the drive would be a laptop sized, internal HDD. There is a weird connector, along with room for the drive. The front panel that the CF card is mounted on would be removed, drive slid into place, and closed back up. Code may or may not be written (yet) to support it, though the CF card interface is very much likea hard disk interface (ATA) already, so it might not need anything new. In fact, you might be able to pull out the CF card and replace it with a hard drive...

However, your still limited to a 2GB space, since so far the MPC only supports FAT16 drives, not FAT32 or anything that supports a larger address space. So, really, the big limit is the FAT tables supported by the firmware. Otherwise, you might as well get a 2.2GB IBM microdrive (Hitachi now).

it sounds nice but in the end... the 1000 is designed for use with a computer, so it does sound kind of pointless... IMO they'd definitely have to add sample editing features(timestretch) and zone editing (please!). They easily do this with the addition of a harddrive couldn't they?

bboy.....if your using a PC along with a 1000 then IMO you should definately have software to do "timestretch, zone editing" functions and wouldnt need an MPC for that. I find good software sounds MUCH better than the MPC when timestretching anyhow...

yea, but with an addition of a HD, you'd think you wouldn't need a computer cuz of the fact you can easily store all your samples on your MPC instead of the comp. But yea, I'm just lazy. I was just hoping Akai would easily take the sample editing codes from the 2XL and get them to work on the 1000. it couldn't be that hard. but I'd still probably buy the HD.

I totally agree with you bboy...Those options should be on the 1000 straight becuase of the fact that it could be if AKAI so chose...its kinda like they hold out just to have things on the 2000xl that arent on the 1000. So when possible MPC buyers see that the 2000xl isnt phased out and still has relevance.
