Recording song to Wav file too quiet.

I've been struggling with this for a while. When I record my song and play it back, it sounded too quiet. Even when I put up the REC gain, it was still very quiet. There is also a level meter and I turned that to 0 and it was still quiet. When I try to normalize it on my computer, the sound was really distorted. Is it supposed to be that way?

why not just put the volume up on it?

like drop it on itunes and put the volume up.

Like I said, when I put the volume up on cool edit pro, it sounds distorted and choppy.

Are you sampling from a turntable? If you are you probably need a preamp.

What soundcard are you using?

Make sure that the record output and input are both line level, you could try swapping the leads out for different ones. With problems like this the best way is to methodically check each stage of the audio chain with different equipment and if something doesn't work as it should with other equipment, you've found your rotten apple.

no you said NORMALISE, thats a different thing that turning the volume up.

No, I'm trying to record my song to my computer but it comes out really quiet. I didn't know MPC had sound cards?

nah your soundcard is in your computer, what sockets on your computer is the mpc wired to?

Oh. I have a sigmatel for a sound card. Nothing is connected to the computer except the USB which I use to put samples into my MPC.

The Stereo outs go into my speakers.

I know the mpc is wired to resample withoutcables hooked up....But I never can see the Meter when I do so.....I just hook a cable from the outs to the ins and turn the monitoring off, so theres no phaze or whatever you wanna call it......

I also bring it into cubase and put a L3 ultra maximizer on it to bring the levels up ....But this is just for a refference track.....

why are you using only your "right" mono out, and connect it to "stereo" in?

you can plug your actual cable into the "headphones" output, or take a cable like this one:

Nevermind all, I fixed the problem. I went to mode > other > global and put the master level to 0dB. It was at -48 before.
