Recording patterns from Alesis SR16 onto MPC1000

I am trying to get some patterns that I have on my SR16 onto my MPC. I can get both units to sync for "playing" at the same time but I can't get the SR16 to sync when I hit "record" on the MPC. As it is now I hit record on the MPC and then have to manually hit play on the SR16 this leads to things not lining up correctly. Any ideas?
