PAD mapping of keys in the MPC 1000

Working late at work and thought this would be a cool post.

Anyone know of a way to find out what pad is what key?

Thanks a mill, Its odd to have it set up in such a way. the thing that really gets me is, when Im in recycle, I create a midi file but when you hit play the hits are all over the place, you can get some really cool breakbeats this way but it would be cool to find out how the midi file creates the notes for the drum parts.

do some research on "General MIDI" and the drum setup on that. The MPC's MIDI notes are based off of that, and the pads are placed more or less like a drum kit, bass in the middle, snare & hat, toms & cymbals.

So when you look at a keyboard, the midi notes make some sense, but once you put those on the pads, they look random. But it does make sense.

Good thing is that if you play with some standard General MIDI (GM) files, the drums will map into your kits (assuming you use a setup just like the MPC does).

you can also set up each particular pad to play whichever midi note you want by setting it up in program and then the note submenu.

I'm about to try this, does anyone know if changing the midi note numbers on an existing program with sequences attached will change the sounds in the sequences? I hope it leaves them untouched.

It might not. The pad and sound are assigned to a midi note at the same place, so even though the sequencer is recording midi notes, not pad hits, if you change the note # on a pad, you also change the sample assigned to that note #.

Thanks Superstar, the diagram in the manual led me to believe this is the case, so I'll use a different program.

After Changing the Pad/MIDI notes assignements, can't you somehow change the default setting for the MPC, so they always have the notes chromaticly?.

It is a real, real, real pain in the butt having to change the notes for the pads everytime you start to build a new program. I don't see anybody using the General Midi note order for creating a program, it is just useless.

YES you can map your own default midi numbers for each pad bank once and for all. I did it a couple hours after I had the MPC so I can't remember hpow its done, but it's in the manual somewhere. I will dig that up at home later.

You can save blank programs each with a different pad layout. Load that up before assigning samples to pads. That way you can have General MIDI style drums, chromatic assignments, whatever.
