see, this is why i got into production...a) because i hear songs in my head...they just come to me and i've had some success getting them out (listen to my zebox page for some examples), and b) most of the stuff i was hearing on the radio/t.v, i felt wasn't as good as the stuff in my head. when i get into the mode of making my tracks, i have a clear cut vision what it's going to sound like...do ya'll do it like that or just experiment and see what comes out (like gumbo)...oh, and f**k the sacramento kings !!!!!!!! i'm so sick of them choking......

depends where my inspiration comes from. these days i pretty much just sample vinyl and get inspiration from what i sample. I used to hear songs in my head then lay em down in Reason.. but since i got my mpc, i now play around with samples, chop em up.. see what happens... the trick for me is hearing a sample and the potential it has.. find a good piece of music and imagine how it could sound chopped up in different wayts with ahard hitting beat on top.. or how itd sound alongside a diff sample altogether..

Sometimes I don't, I just chop sounds and make a rythm track and build from there, my beats is improvised probably 95% of the time. Sometimes I get something in my head and go execute it, once I was throwing clothes in my washing machine and had an idea for a drum pattern I wasn banging on the washing machine, so I went upstairs and chopped up a drum kit and layed it down and we ended up using it on a 12" single release. You never know what will come out of the stuff in your head.

Most of the time (and i dont mean to sound gay or anything) how ever im feeling about something i just start making beats and work off that or i make a melody and work off that. For an example if I'm feeling down or relaxed i make a slow tempo song. if im hyped over something i make a fast tempo, Majority of the time. I guess it all depends, but i always make beats in my head.

i don't know about the hearing songs in my head. atmost an outline or a certain sensibility. thought is more abstact than anything that can be expressed so i think it's very rare when things come out sounding the way they do in ones head. you're mind is limited by the influence of your imagination, which will always change with every passing second. however, your equipment will never evolve and that will hold you back always. more than anything hope for accidents. if any1 is interested in a more in depth explaination check out the article that woke me up.

^^^^ okay....but for me, i can hear a beat in my head and i can make it sound just like in my head....for instance, one time, i was pumping gas and the pump had a mechanical beat to it...like "hut-tink-hut-tink..."...i always keep a micro recorder with me (you can get them for like 25 bucks) and i recorded that sound into it, ran home, it comes with a usb port, dumped it into my computer and built my track....to each his own i guess, but, then again, my production output isn't that fast...i try to make a beat a week, not by obsessing over it, just by taking my time...one beat might wind up becoming 3 or 4, you know? but at least i try...we all do....peace ya'll
