i just got a used mpc1000, i was trying to learn how to load samples and get started, but when i locate the file i want to load, and hit "do it" i get an error message that the sample name already exists... what am i doing wrong? i really wanted to be able to start making beats quickly, this sucks

You could try renaming the file before loading it. Or check if you do have a sample loaded with that name, if it's the same sample you don't need to load it again, if it's not then delete it first. You could deactivate Autoload so there are no samples loaded automatically when you power up.

See chapter 15 in the manual, it explains all those options.

this was from the card, and samples i just put on from the computer, so unless all the samples were already named there, i don't think that is the case... also if i choose the command to replace, nothing happens at all
