mpc1000 compact flash issue(loading samples)

Alright ill try to keep this short and simple as possible.
i have a used mpc1000 that i just purchased from guitar center
came with nothing but the power cord. not even the factory preset sample, owners manual
or box for that matter. so i download the factory presets and start filling up my compact flash card with just
basically kicks snares and hihats that ive collected over the past year or so
(which are all .wav files) however when i try to load them from
my memory card to use them on the mpc, only like 4 of the sounds worked the rest
gave me no feedback whatsoever. and they all worked fine on the computer.
or
i would load lets say 7 different drum samples,
however when i load them to the internal memory all 7 samples
sound exactly alike. when i know for a fact they dont just sound similar
in the first place.

please help. this is pissing me off.

Make sure the wavs are 16bit 44.1Khz, names not longer then 16 characters

(BTW, if haven't downloaded the manual yet, I'd suggest to do it asap. )

nice, i just found out some are 8 bit. whats the best way to change it to 16?
