4 Assignable Outs, Stereo - Mono

quick question about the 4 outs on the back. if i wanted to send a sound (signal) to another piece of equipment that samples in mono (like an Akai S950 or an Emu Emax rack) could i just run one cable from output #1?

would that only send the left side of the signal or would it convert it to mono? i know when you go to assign outs on the mixer screen, you can only choose them in stereo pairs, like 1/2 or 3/4.

but if i just run a cable from output 1 to the input of a mono sampler, will it send a mono signal or just the left side of the stereo signal?

well if every sound is mono inside the machine and everything is panned to the center it should be okay...


but I know what you mean because some older gear has that feature. I have 3 pieces of older hardware that does that.

so basically if the sound is already mono then its fine. i see, i guess i should just expirement when i get the equipment. see if it will convert stereo sounds to mono, save some hassle if i didn't sample in mono to begin with.

so with your pieces of equipment, do you generally sample directly to them? or do you just make the sound mono in the MPC to begin with?

depends on the sample... kick drums are usually in mono... sometimes all drums. depends... often musical samples or clips of classical music for example will get sampled in stereo.

I often would audition the incoming signal and switch the jog between mono and stereo and compare the two. if it is close to the same I always took mono.

it won't convert to mono - but if the exact same signal is being output on the L and R channels then it doesn't matter if you only use one of them - it's the same signal

if the L and R channels have different signals (i.e. it's in stereo) then recording only one channel will record only that channel

like the manual says (page 79) if you want a pad to only use a single out (not a pair) then pan it hard left or hard right, using the L/PAN controls

P.S. a note on page 79 talks about eight assignable mix outs ... I assume that was a copy'n'paste job from the mpc2500 manual, it should say four not eight
