Step recording possible?

Hi, I'm fairly new to the MPC and I'm wondering if it's possible to do a step by step recording of notes being entered manually by me using the pads without having to press the "insert" button for every note.

A lot of low end drum machines have this so I can't help but think a dedicated sequencer would do something similar.
