Using MPC1000 Live

i'm looking at getting an MPC1000 to sequence my live stuff.... never used an MPC before and have a few questions....

Would i have to have a break between songs? or can you mix from one song into the next without stopping?

How many programs can you have loaded up at once and how easy/quick is it to change between them? is it possible to be playing two separate programs at once (sort of multi timbral???)

I've had the same questions...as I am building a live set as we speak.
I have been told to write loops (what sort of music you planning on playing) with different sounds or similiar sounds on different tracks. you should not have any more than 16 tracks playing for any sequence so that you can see all of the track mute options in the track mute screen without having to scroll between banks. each built up loop would comprise on sequence. you should have some tracks from an old sequence on the new so that when you switch sequences you will not have to change all of the sound entirely. track mute is the key!
I use two tracks ussually for kick, one for bass line, several for drums, and several more for synths. I write minimal techno mostly so, I usually don't use any more than 5-10 tracks per sequence. Group your like sounds to one of the four outs on the mpc1000 to a mixer so that you can tweek levels. make sure you have synths with lots of knobs to turn.
I did see in detroit last weekend a fella named Shawn Rudiman who played a live set without any pre-made loops( well maybe a couple for basslines). He just tapped in his beats, hats and drums and kick on the fly. Of course he had a 909, 808, access virus, ER-1, an old ass fully analog synth, mixer, and something else i'd never seen before...

I just recently used it Live for the first time. I varied how I used the MPC in my setup. Some trax I just made a 4bar sequence that looped and filled up my tracks on the MPC enabling me to drop loops in and out where I wanted.

I also had other songs that were sequenced completely from start to finish, allowing me to play guitar and use outboard efx to alter certain tracks on the MPC.

one of the great things about the 1000 is the fact that you can totally knock up music on the fly - the fact you can drop in and out of recording and also change patterns and erase notes without stopping means you can totally jam if you want. i do a mixture of both when playing live, a lot of it is structured and i spend a long time setting it up - but i always try and keep an element of improvisation and jamming in there through FX tweaks/loops and pad stabbing.

Is there any way to demo a sound in the phones without it playing through the outs?

don't think so... by the time i've set up a program and had a play with it i usually know what is where. agree it would be nice to have though...

When i play live, I always plug the outs to the mixer and the headphones to the mixer too. And then whaen I wand to demo the sund I just bring the fader down, but I can still hear everything in the headphones.
