Is there a maximum folder size?

Hi all,
I've just spent the past few months (a few hours here & there) trawling my vinyl and sampling a whole heap of stuff onto the MPC. I've saved the samples recorded into a daily folder, trimmed them all down and then moved (via USB) into a single folder - with the intention of going back through when I've finished, to sort into beats, bass, fills etc and possibly again by rough speed.

As you can imagine, the single folder where I'm moving these samples to is pretty huge now with a large number of samples (1000+). I've noticed that when I'm going through the list of samples on the MPC, quite a few appear to be missing...however if I connect via USB they are definitely there.

My solution was to (for the time being), break this huge folder into alphabetic sub-folders (eg A-C, D-F etc...). This appears to fix the problem, all the missing samples appear to be present when going through the MPC.

So I was wondering, if anyone else has come across this...and if so, is there a recommended folder size - in terms of number of items?

What version of the OS are you using?

I know on some MPC's it sorts files by something other than alphabetic (date maybe?). The Akai OS may also not be alphabetic on the 1k/2.5k, but JJOS2XL does seem to be alphabetic from experience.

I'm on JJOS2...although switching to JJOS1 didn't make any difference.

do the missing samples have similar names as ones that do show up?

e.g. do you have "snare hit blah blah 1" and "snare hit blah blah 2" which only differ at the end of the name?

There is a 16 character limit (first 16) that the MPC can differentiate from. What should happen if you are seeing this is that you'd see two files that look to have the same name, and they sound the same when you play the sound. If you rename one of them then you can hear the two play different sounds.

No, I don't think its a filename problem because I named all the samples directly on the MPC as I was recording them, so they're all under 16 characters.

In some cases it was where I'd got a whole bunch of samples named with the same first few letters, for example my bunch of PaulNero samples, labelled 'PaulNero1' through to 'PaulNero10'...only showed up the first 2 or 3. However, other samples didn't show up at all - even if their names were unique.

...bizarre. Still, serves me right for not doing this sooner and sorting them out properly!
