Problems with pad banks jumping, and recording

i just bought a mpc1000, and everytime i try to record if i start on pad bank a, when i press record, it jumps to another pad bank...also if i set my recording parameters and then hit record they revert back to what was originlly set...i have installed jj os 4.99 and that isn't helping...is the problem mechanical, or is there something i can do myself to maybe reset the unit's settings?
