MPC 1000 Problem - White Noise/Static

Hi!

I'm having some major issues with my MPC 1000. When I load up a project, I can edit and play back normally for about a minute, give or take. Then out of nowhere I get a sharp burst of white noise/static which overpowers everything, leaving me with no choice but to reboot.

I bought the MPC second hand about 15 months ago and have been using it fairly regularly. Until recently I had no problems. The erratic behaviour began about a week ago when it would suddenly crash due to a "general exception error".

I've tried various memory cards and restoring factory settings, but the problem persists. The MPC came with the 128 RAM upgrade. I'm running JJ OS (version 4.99 I think) but haven't figured out how to reinstall it. I have this horrible suspicion it might be a hardware problem though.

Any words of advice or ideas on how to revive it? Or is it a case of too little, too late?

I also noticed that I often get a CPU error when I purge. I'm assuming this is related to the other problem, because it wasn't doing this before.

Anybody? I'm pretty desperate here...

Try pulling out the RAM upgrade and see if that fixes the problem. Also try resetting the MPC to factory settings (hold down erase and power up). Try installing a different OS (Akai or JJ - you can install any of the JJ versions for testing purposes, the paid versions just won't allow you to save your work) and see if the problems persist.

Resetting to factory settings did nothing.

I updated my JJ OS to the latest version - it still crashes after a few minutes, but the white noise has been replaced by an "illegal general error" message.

I took out the RAM and ran the machine on 16MB. It didn't crash. However a lot of the samples in my project didn't playback. But I'm guessing this is because 16MB is just too weak to cope. So maybe the problem was the RAM upgrade going bust? I'm gonna get a new one today and see if that does it.

In the end the RAM was what was causing problems. I seem to have worn it out.

New 256MB laptop RAM ordered on ebay just arrived in the mail - works like a charm. No white noise and no CPU errors!
