A used AKAI S series sampler, Yamaha A 5000, or Emu 6400Ultra, and an Edirol PCR-80.

I would not part with my Kawai K5000S. Crazy sounds alright, but the memory upgrade can't be found any more, you can only store about 90-100 patches unexpanded, and load more from floppy. There's one on eBay for $125 (click), but it won't stay that low - are they freaking nuts?

I've also heard nice things said about the Alesis ION, though the keys are not up to "master" standard.

Novation has a Remote25 that includes audio I/O and a K-station synth built in. They make some tight sh^t. You won't get the usual horns and strings type of junk (got some cheapo nanosynth or something for that stuff), but every sound will sound good.

Plus, it'll fit your portable rig.

I got my ME 1 shortly after I got the k5000. I like to have all my gear as expanded as possible within reason. I got it from a kawai service center in 99, you may want to check with Kawai, they may have some left in Japan or the UK.

You could see it this way: if you want a master keyboard, and a sound module, most keyboard synths can work that way if you switch Local Off. That "splits" the keyboard from the synth, which means you can use an external sequencer (like the MPC1000) to give you flexible routing. ..

i got reason 2.5 and a k-station I tweak beats all day. if you buy gear that you can make your own sounds you never be limited.
