Juat's up? Noob question......

Hey guys, this is my first post, so first and foremost I would like to thank all of the contributors here, for helping to keep this valuable resource available and open to all the people that would otherwise be stuck with unanswered questions and unrealized goals (regarding the MPC).

I've been lurking here for about a month, gleaning information and laughing with some of you at the noobs. Granted this is my first post, but come on.....

I'm a sound engineer from Reno, NV. I've been using samplers for about two years, before that I was using synths, drum machines and other stuff to make beats. I love old school hip-hop, be-bop & basement punk.

My question; is more of a have you run into this problem and what am I doing wrong type of thing.

I did read the manual, I even went thru 40+ pages here to see if anyone else had run into this; I even google searched this.

Alright, I loaded up my MPC with 51mb of samples, I saved the entire memory to a project file; then I gave it an autoload file. When I powered up a few days later, it loaded 40mb of sounds and some of my samples wouldn't load. So, I checked the CF card, most of my samples still existed on the card but somehow I did lose a lot of samples.

After a few days, I figured out that my autoload file also contained memory, from this I decided to remove the autoload file. I'm at 62mb and I'm not losing samples anymore. So that's cool. For a minute I thought my RAM or CF card was at fault. Hell, I even suspected the OS (2.13).

TLDR, Cool story bro'd

Coming from the Korg ES-1/ESX-1 I wasn't expecting to enjoy the MPC workflow, but so far I'm impressed with this well thought out and incredible sounding machine.

just a wild guess - did any of the samples have filenames that only differ in the last few characters?

ha, I'm new to this forum, but i've been around gear forums for years.

luckily I backed up most of my samples, to a computer. I did have to go back and redo about 11mb worth of sound. Maybe I should recreate this 'problem' to fully understand it. As of now I blame 'user error'.

It did delete similar patches with long names that only differ in the last few characters

Wouldn't load or didn't load?

There are times when I'll save a project, and then when I load it back up, some of the samples don't load back into memory. The way I deal with that is to go back and load the whole folder (set 'replace same files' to 'no'). That will force the MPC to load all the unloaded samples in that folder (so make sure you save each project in its own separate folder).

I've never had files actually disappear off the drive (CF or HDD) before... I have had an occasional sample get corrupted, however, meaning that you could see it but you couldn't load it (I got the dreaded 'WRONG FILE!' message)... Can you describe your exact experience in more detail?

At any rate, JJ fixed a crucial save/load bug that (to my knowledge) still exists in the Akai OS (there's info on it somewhere around here), so I highly suggest you download and install the free version of JJ OS. Just to be on the safe side.

Oh ok so you ran up against the 16 character filename issue. Here's a rundown of how to get around that:

Didn't load. I was using a different method of saving*. I checked the CF card and a lot of my samples were still there. I also found that the autoload file, was using some of the memory i.e. it contained all of the files in my project file.

*saving process
#1. save all memory to project1 (overwrite same files)........"Create Error" would come up.....
#2. save all memory again (overwrite same files)
#3. Autoload file.

I try to keep my sample names below eight characters, with a number code at the end.

ex..comsyn12, radio04..etc

I'll see if I can force it to make this mistake again, as I don't really understand it.
