Hard Drive Advantages

Hello,

I am looking to upgrade from my MPC 500 to a 1000 as recently I have started to really appreciate making beats on the MPC as opposed to my computer.

I am looking to buy a second hand MPC and hopefully put a hard drive in it, but I just wanted to know the advantages of having a hard drive.

For example - could I have large hard drive in the MPC and then fill it with albums, breaks etc for storage and come back at a later date and listen to the songs as a whole and chop the parts I want as necessary?

For me this would be ideal - I would like to collect a lot of music I find interesting and store them on the hard drive, then come back at a later stage and take the parts I want from it without a computer.

My second question from that is will previewing a whole song on the MPC actually be practical?

I.e would I be able to load whole songs into memory? Then could I preview it easily enough and take out sounds?

does it sound practical to you ? the longer the audio file the longer it will take for the mpc to process it...on a given beat only few few second chops are used. do you wanna be scrolling around entire song looking for those chops ?

I am not sure as I have never chopped samples on a 1000 before - just the 500 and a computer.
I assume you can scroll through a song on the MPC 1000, as you would a wave editor on a computer?

Well, you can, but it is a bit tedious. Hit-and-miss with lots of scrolling. Much easier on a wave editor, really.

You can make it work, though. Listen the whole song first, then extract sections that contain parts or sounds you might use, extract even shorter sections, chop and trim. Repeat as needed.
