IDE hard drive vs CF card

I am in two minds over whether to get a larger CF card or an IDE Hard drive to extend the amount of samples I can store on the MPC1000. What would anyone recommend? I cannot get both but as far as I can tell, they both do the same thing?...

How about CF card(s)? Last time Newegg had a sale I got 10 2GB cards at $120. I actually could have got 4GB cards at the same price, but they were for a 2000XL which will only format 1GB max. Even if they're not on sale they are only in the $20 range.

Of course an IDE drive will probably only cost about $60. A 149GB drive will format to 120GB in a 1000/2500, and you can get 140+ if you format it in an external enclosure (or mount it internally and swap it out). The HD has moving parts, but I think unless you really beat on your MPC , that's no big issue.

Either way you can get a lot of storage for $75 or less.

CF will always be more flexible, reliable and stable.

It's a no brainer...

I'd go with HD. You get more than enough storage space and don't need to hassle with different CF-cards ("now which card had my organ instrument")

Don't worry about it breaking on your pad-banging, cuz the HD is only accessed on save & load (loaded to ram) operations. Rest of the time it's in sleep-mode. In any case you should backup your media regularly.

I would guess you could access a hard drive mounted on a 1000 using a computer via the usb connection. Is that true? If so, that would let you keep the option of transferring files from a DAW or program editor onto the MPC, which to me is really nice. Plus the added storage capacity is staggering, almost unnecessary.
