BORING BEATS....

WHAT UP,

I OWNED MY MPC FOR ABOUT A MONTH NOW AND I LOVE IT TO DEATH. BUT THE ONLY PROBLEM IS MY BEATS JUST SOUND A LITTLE BORING. I MEAN ILL MAKE A HOT SEQUENCE BUT THEN IT JUST SOUNDS TO REPEDATIVE. EVEN IF I MAKE A FEW SEQUENCES WITH SLIGHT CHANGES IN THE MELODY IT STIL SOUNDS BORING. AND I HAVE A HARD TIME FINDING SOUNDS THAT MATCH, LIKE FOR EXAMPLE A GUITAR AND A PIANO THAT GO WELL TOGETHER AND COMPLIMENT EACHOTHER. HOW CAN I SPICE UP MY BEATS? I PRODUCE ONLY HIP-HOP MUSIC SO ALL YOU HIP-HOP PRODUCERS HELP ME OUT. IM NOT ASKING FOR IDEAS, BECAUSE I GOT PLENTY AND I HAVE ALOT OF QUALITY SAMPLES TO, I JUST WANT TO KNOW SOME TRICKS ON HOW TO SPICE UP MY BEATZ, AND KEEP THEM FROM BEING TO REPEDATIVE. EFFECTS, ETC...ALSO IT SEEMS LIKE IM STUCK ON ONE DRUM PATERN BASICALLY KICK KICK SNARE KICK KICK SNARE...ANYONE KNOW A GOOD WAY TO MAKE GOOD DRUM LOOPS TO MATCH MELODYS? ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!

Some ideas:

Play around with the tempo while recording - crank it up to 180, try to lay a beat down by hand, slow it back down later. Or vice versa.

Keep the T.C. loose (1/32, or even Off) while recording, don't just nail everything down to 1/8

Time Sigs: 5/8, 6/8, 7/8. 9/8 for that Prog Rock feel. Use sparingly for effect, throw the listener off balance, but let them climb back on board.

Listen to your fave tracks, for the little things. That almost inaudible sound at the back of the mix is not there by mistake, it's "atmosphere" you can use.

Now, if only I listened to my own advice...! (Those who can, do; those who can't, teach.)

that's a good one, especially for hip-hop stylee music... get some really quiet atmosphere going on in the background. stop sampling other people's tunes and start sampling background ambience from films, you get some mad rythmns from street scenes, footsteps, etc etc.

The best thing you could do would be to learn music theory and incorporate that into what your doing. You can have your beats build up like real complex musical peices instead of being so repetative. But thats what Hip-Hop is... its repetative. Thats why we work with emcees...

nobody said that, i said dont judge how boring a beat is till u hear an mc on it cuz an mc can bring a boring beat to life
