Step Editing

I can't figure out how to tweak the event timing to pull a note slightly forward or push it back. This is useful not only for adding some "manual swing" to drum parts but also for picking up events that have been pushed to the wrong side of the beat during timing correction.

The step edit screen has a timing-correction tab, which is just like the realtime recording mode, allowing me to quantize/swing selected notes - but that doesn't quite do what I need... The cut and paste feature is allows me to move an event around, but this method is slow and really clumsy.

Does anyone know a slick way to program/edit individual event times directly?

You already got it...cut & paste. Currently, there is no editing of a single step, even though the mode is called "step edit".

Ronson: this has gotta be the most ridiculous limitation of the 1000.

seeing as how its such a basic function, and the mpc's are known for being such powerhouses when it comes to sequencing, i lost my mind when i found out you couldn't easily edit single events in step edit.

most of the other things people are complaining about are more like add ons and "wishlist" type of things that MAYBE i can understand why akai have not addressed them.....


BUT EDITING EVENT TIMES IN STEP EDIT IS A BASIC FEATURE!!!!
UNTIL THEY PUT IT IN AN OS UPDATE AKAI HAVE OFFICIALLY SCREWED US!!!!

its such a small amount of code for them to add to the OS, i cant understand WHY they would not add this (unless they are possibly planning to drop a 1000xl in the future, in which case i would gladly like to stab anyone affiliated with akai in the throat for scamming all of us).

Thanks for the empathy punchdrunk - bitterness quite understandable.

This is my first MPC and I've gotta say its exceeded my expectations in pretty much every respect except this one irritation (albeit a fairly major one). If Akai would fix it in the next OS update, I really would be a happy camper.

i completely agree with you ronson.

as soon as they put this in an os update i will be happy with the 1000.
i love my 1000 for the most part. but i just get extremely angry cause i edit stuff so much, that i encounter this problem with the 1000 every time i make a sequence.

and its really not hard for them to fix if they wanted to.

its wierd, its almost like they tried to implement the feature b/c if you highlight the event time and push the shift+back cursor, it highlights a certain part of it (forgot which part) as if you could enter another number or scroll the data wheel. i dunno... this was my main beef when i first got it, but now I can move events with my eyes closed. its just that damn bug where if you push play to play the event quickly, while changing velocity, it suddenly takes me to the erase screen... and i'm the only one who bitches about this. ohh well.

if you hit shift-back cursor you can select the last three digits in the event time.

the weird thing is, you can't do it with the first (top) event that is visible??!
try it, its odd.

i have an event at 001.01.01 and another one at 001.01.42.
i can't select the individual digits on 001.01.01 but i can do it on my second event (001.01.42).
now if i scroll the screen down so the first event that is visibile is the 001.01.42 event, i can't select the digits anymore??

it seems like they started to do it, and then forgot halfway through and started to work on a different part. this is some crap that i would expect to see in a program one my friends programmed. NOT SOMETHING I WOULD SPEND MONEY ON.

"...Please understand that the MPC1000 was not designed to replace the more advanced MPC2000XL and MPC4000 machines...the MPC2000XL and MPC4000 offer much more advanced editing features on the samples as well as the sequences. The MPC1000 is designed primarily as the entry-level model with just the basics. If you find the lack of certain features a problem for you, I would recommend investigating the MPC2000XL or MPC4000 machines to see if they will better meet your needs."

Apparently event-time edits are too "advanced" for a $1000 beatbox.

i love the much more advanced 32mb ram and zip disk option...that ish is so next level...they can eat a 8==D
