MPC 1000 TO CLEAN!!!!???

WHAT UP,

IVE BEEN TRYING EVERYTHING I CAN TO GET A DIRTY SOUND OUT OF MY MPC1K. WHEN I SAY DIRTY I JUST MEAN LIKE A GRIMEY SOUND LIKE FOR EXAMPLE PETE ROCK, OLD SKOOL WU TANG/RZA TYPE BEATS..ETC IVE TRYED USING GRIMEY DISTORTED SAMPLES, IVE TRIED USING BACKGROUND NOISES, IVE TRIED FILTERING AND USING THE MPC EFFECTS LIKE THE BIT GRUNGER, BUT NOTHING HELPS. MY BEATS STILL SOUND TO CRISP AND CLEAR. IVE HEARD OTHER CATS ON THIS BOARD(LIKE BAICHAI) WHO MAKE BEATS ON THE MPC1000 THAT SOUND GRIMEY AS HELL...I KNOW THAT THE MPC 1K WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO RE-CREATE THE SAME GRIMEYSOUND LIKE THE OLDER MPC'S LIKE THE MPC-60 OR 3000, BUT LIKE I SAID IVE HEARD CATS THAT ARE USING A MPC1000 THAT COME CLOSE. WHAT CAN I DO TO GET THAT GRIMEY DIRTY SOUND TO MY BEATS...SOMEONE PLEEEASE HELP!

you just got to experiment dude. things like that don't come easy...

get some outboard gear to dirty up your sound... overdriving through an analogue mixing desk is a classic way to get grime, or invest in a guitar distortion pedal - loads of people use guitar FX as their 'secret' weapon.

Start with dirty samples -

I recommend getting a cheap distortion stomp box and either insert it on your samples or use it as a send

get a cheap old hifi turntable

Try using the built-in effect that quantizes the sample (Bit Grunger) down to a lower number of bits., or Compressor (crank up the Gain & Ratio, and lower threshold)

If you use a PC/MAC/Linux, I'd recommend you get something like audacity (it's free) or cool edit/audition from adobe (it's not free), and start playing! Open a sample, and apply an effect to it. Effects you'd start off with (before getting really creative) is Quantize (quantuize to use lower number of bits), Resample (resample to lower sample rates), Distortion, overdrive, and compression. Th more you play, the more you learn.

Also, your questions are NOT mpc1000 specific. Try looking at the other forums on this website, like Production Techniques, or other websites. Once you know the MPC1k (that's your job), those forums are the places to look.

could someone explain overdriving to me?

Classically it's done by driving an output with more volume/gain than another input can handle (hence the name...the inputs are over driven). (There's lots of other ways to do distortion or overdrive also). Most "distortion" or "Overdrive" effects do this all in one unit. But you can do it bewteen two devices, or within your mixer. Crank up the MPC outs, and if you've got a MIC/LINE preamp gain, crank that up, too. Then turn down the master outs (so your distorting in the mixer, not at your speakers). Voila, overdrive.

try raising the master output level on the mpc. my stuff sounds totally different if it's set to -6, -12 or -18. that'll grimey it up right there.

other than rthat, JUST KEEP WORKING ON IT! you'll figure it all out with practice.

dont listen to anyone, u dont need outboard gear or any of that crap, just sample directly from vinyl, dont use sample disks or any shit like that, just straight from the vinyl, u should get a nice crunchy sound.

you can get cool edit pro for free online, **** that 400, steal that ish, i guess other ways would be to record it to tape then resample? not sure haven't tried it but it may work
