I can't record any samples on my MPC 1000.

Hi, I just got a used MPC 1000 that seems in mostly all good condition. It came with a memory card (16 MB I think) and had the basic drum sounds already provided and loaded on it. I was able to figure out how to make my own program and I'm very slowly getting the gist of it (this is the first time I've ever used an MPC ever).

So now I'm trying to make my own samples just by plugging a mic in and stuff and I was following the directions through the manual on how to record a sample, but it's not working. I go to the record screen and the time is set to "00m00s", so I try to change the time and it won't let me. So I try to press F6 to record anything and nothing happens.

Does anyone have any suggestions? It was a used memory card so perhaps there's no more space? If so, can I delete old stuff on there to make room? Any feedback or help would be awesome please. Thank you.

What do you mean? The manual says you can plug mics directly into the MPC to record your own samples straight to it. And even regardless of that, the record time limit wouldn't budge when I tried to change it.

you could if you run the mic into a microphone preamp first... but that wouldn't be "directly" into the MPC's inputs.

when you press record, does it say "WAITING FOR INPUT SIGNAL" at the bottom? 'cause it may just be that you have the threshold setting on.

Maybe its out of ram usually due to the fact that you loaded sounds off the cf

Thanks to everyone for all the feedback and suggestions. I haven't even tried hooking up my laptop to the MPC yet to see if that would take in any files to use for samples since I don't have the right cord to connect them at the moment, but I'm going to try it and see if even that works.

To the person who responded a few posts up- No, there's no message that comes up about any lack of signal or anything. Regardless of the mic or if I'm using the input incorrectly or anything like that, I should still be able to adjust the recording time on the screen, right?

Also, to the most recent response- How would I go about removing old memory to make room to make my own recordings? And what does "cf'" stand for?

CF stands for Compact Flash, You use a compact flash memory card to load/save your program files, chopped samples etc. Also you can transfer .wav files from your PC to your 1k cf memory card via usb too.

Yup. Ram is full.

You can erase the memory through program mode. Delete the programs you dont use. Then purge the samples of the programs you have deleted. Check the manual on that. Probably the chapter that covers how to deal with programs.

Hey, so I just deleted all the old programs and sequences that I assume were left over from the last person who owned this MPC. However, when I go into Record mode and try to change the time (I don't have any mic or mixer or anything hooked up to the MPC, but I just wanted to see if the time limit will work now) nothing happens. It still stays at "0m00s". Is there something wrong with the MPC? Even though I have nothing plugged in, shouldn't I at least be able to mess around with the time setting anyway?

I gave up on recording my own samples for the moment anyway, haha, and now I'm trying to just upload songs from my Mac to chop up on my MPC but I'm having trouble with that as well, haha. Oh well. I made a new thread to ask some questions about that as well, it's at the top of the MPC 1000 section of these forums.

C'mon, read the manual and start to understadn there's a difference between RAM memory and storage memory (Compact Flash card).
Everything you record will be recorded to your RAM memory, NOT your CF card.

You have to record your samples when haven't loaded in anything at all, or erase the RAM MEMORY like I said in my previos post.

I just don't think you understand what an MPC is meant to do.

Youtube is your friend, bro.

Get on there and look at all the basic mpc1000 videos and you will start figuring it out. Not to mention, download and read the manual! Its pretty straightforward!
