MPD Controller with MPC 1000

Hello MPC masters! I have searched the forum and other sites looking for info on this, and have found similar threads but nothing exact that answers my question. Hope you guys can help!

I have an MPC 1000 that I am using to play "live" drumming over various formats of electronic music. While the 1000 is very responsive, I would prefer to have the full size pads as found on the 2500/5000. While the quickest resolution would be just to use one of the larger MPCs (obvious!), I am wondering if an MPD controller can be used to map/trigger the sounds from the 1000. In addition to being able to utilize the larger pads, I would also be preserving the native pads on my 1000. (which has the updated sensor sheet).

I am thinking this may work via a midi connection, but I have zero experience with midi! Does anyone know if this solution will work? If so, do you think there would be any latency? (this is a no-go if there is even 1ms of latency, as I am playing 8th and 16th notes along with DnB tunes at 165+ bpm and even silght delay is noticable).

yeah, that'll work fine. think about getting something better than the MPD, though.
as for latency, two things: first, your brain can't determine latency < 10ms, and that's being generous. second, your brain will automatically correct your finger performance to adjust to latency as you become accustomed to the new pads.

In short: yes. You'll be able to play mpc sounds using an external controller. Using the stock OS it's limited to the active track (the one you've got selected at that moment). Latest JJOS versions make the machine 16ch multitimbral.

Not familiar with the MPD, so couple of things you need to check:
1. Does it run via a psu, batteries or only draws power from USB port?
2. Does it have have Midi out? Otherwise you need to use a converter/run it through a computer or an interface.

But first things first, get yourself familiar with MIDI.

Can't comment on your sub 1ms latency requirement but in my experience hardware to hardware midiconnections "just work".

Also recommend you to check the manual. It explains what you need to do really well and in simple terms.

Good answers so far, thanks! I'm sure I need something with a power supply, because there won't be a USB connection to provide power in this set up. I've read the manual many times, and will probably benefit from it more with some more knowledge of how MIDI works between devices.

M:T:C, you mention that with stock OS I am limited to the active track. I am not really using tracks for these performances, basically I am creating programs with single drum hits on each pad and just playing them as one shots. The only thing I select is the program, and since I am not recording anything I am not utilizing tracks for this. With stock OS, do you think the MPD (or whatever controller I select) can potentially map to the 16 pads/banks to mirror the program in the 1000?

Yeah sure. Pads are just like keyboard keys ie. they send notes. So you'd setup your controllers each pad to match the note values of your mpc pads. One track is then enough for you.

You'd probably also want to be able to send Program Change midi messages from the controller so you could change the selected program on fly. Don't know which versions support this but at least latest jjos does.
