so you wanna talk drums?

anybody sum up for me, what makes drums "dope"

to me, its the pattern that catches me, but sometime when i hear a really powerfull snare, that turns me on too

is it the drums themself? or is it how they match the melody? is it the umph, or the punch? the thickness or the amount of bass?

any info is appreaciated, c'mon lets talk drums

I think, like hip-hop itself, Drums are different to each person... I mean

Premo would prolly tell you it's in the sound and feel of the drums, as well as the swing...

RJD2 or Shadow would prolly say in the rhythm and complexity, and just the power of them...

Madlib would prolly tell you it's in how dirty they are...

For me, it's about punch more than anything... I like to get snares that snap real hard (sometimes with a little reverb depending on the track)...

The rhythm isn't as important to me... I've heard tracks that rarely change up the rhythm at all, but they just drew me in because of how well they fit the sample...

I just did a track the other day... I wanted the snare to match this Really depressing sample... SO I compressed the hell out of it and then threw on a Gate reverb... The only word to describe that snare was 'Rain'... It sounded like rain... And it matched so perfectly that really any rhythm would've worked for me...

It's different for everybody though...

Coming from an African drumming background . . .

drums have a pitch in the sense that they play off each other. You can have a good kick & snare, but if they are not complementary they it's a no go.

I like several layers to my drums. This is complicated b/c keeping their ptiches in tune is a headache.

Secondly, it's the pattern/drummer.

A good drummer like Questlove from the Roots can switch the drums and it still fits. In African drumming, the lead drummer is directing the dancers.

i am a jazz / funk / everything drummer that has started on electro stuff... i like to imagine a bass line when i'm playing grooves, or if ya wanna make the drums feature, then think of a melody instead. i've found it is a lot harder to sequence what you hear than it is to play what you hear.

What makes em dope for me...

The crisp-ness of them...

I love drum (kicks) that have punch " not Jab and not bolo...lol" just have a good solid crisp (tight) thump to them..
and dirty snares... I usually combine 2 or 3 different ones to get right..
may not sound right but when i start posting tracks in a week or two
you can witness what I'm trynna explain...

in regards to drums, and music generally, i love density. but then again some of my favorite beats have very simple drum patterns. if you guys want to here some great drums though listen to Venetian Snares' "chocolate wheelchair album." he comes fukin hard
