Hey all,

I'm looking at picking up a used MPC 1000. The pad sensors and RAM have been upgraded and the price is right. However, the seller says that the bank lights occasionally turn on and jump banks randomly.

I'm wondering if this could be a software issue. I'll try to find out what OS it's running. If it's more likely hardware related, does this sound like a DIY soldering fix or something I should take it into the shop for?

See if you can ask if it actually changes banks.
If it actually just goes from one to another, i.e. the pads play the new bank's samples, then it could just be a crapped out tact switch.


But something the seller might not know, the way the LEDs and switches are wired up, there are combinations of button-presses which when done simultaneously can light up some of the button LEDs.

I think one example is TAP TEMPO + F4. Press them at the same time, (probably a pretty common thing, it's the 1/16 TC option) and it lights up the pad D or B bank light, I think.

Note that in this case, it's not actually switching banks, just lighting up the lights. But it could look like it's randomly jumping around, when it's not. It's a hardware "problem", which doesn't actually affect anything.

Thanks for the info, sciguy. Decided to go ahead and purchase it. Hit the guy with another email, so we'll see what he says about the "issue".

Best case scenario, it's not an issue at all. And sounds like worst case is I'll have to swap a tact switch.

Will keep you guys posted. It comes with an uninstalled SSD kit, so I'll have to hit the harddrive sticky and do some research on that front.

Finally got the full rundown on the unit. It definitely needs a bit of love. It's currently running JJ OS Free.

The "wiring issue", as the seller describes it, is the unit powers on and the over dub button lights up, when you turn the over dub off, it jumps banks. Other buttons apparently light up as well. He said tapping on the back of the unit usually resolves the issue.

With my limited knowledge of MPCs, does this sound like a cold solder somewhere? Where's the best place to look on the PCB?

Besides that, it's missing two buttons and one of the side panels is "loose". Looks like I'll be a making a little MPC Stuff order to get this thing back to its former glory.

If it's repairable, that'd be great. Unfortunately, I'm a full ocean and continent away. Not sure if I'd like to ship the whole unit so far.

If you could source a working PCB, refurbished or otherwise, at less than MPC Stuff, I might be interested though. Could do the install myself, I'm sure.

There's a few solid pro audio repair spots in my city, as well. Wondering if it'd be cheaper to source the board and install myself or go the repair route. Guess it depends on the extent of the damage.

Hey... I just bought an mpc1000 off of ebay and it has the *exact* same issues... same bank switching and everything. The video you posted mimics the same behavior on mine.

Coincidence?

Let me know if you come up with any answers on this.

I still think the fault is a voltage issue on the LED control line.

A photo of your PCb would be much more useful.

There is maybe a faulty resistor or an unwanted bridge somewhere

Check solder points
Check socket headers
Check PCb plug pins
Check for cracks
Check for bad solder (accidental bridging)

As the voltage hits one led it should not bleed into the chain. I think that damage or dodgy repair work could cause this

Send me a high resolution photo of the reverse side of the control PCb
