difference between memory card and memory expansion board

What is the difference between those two things? Or are they the same thing?

Which one is better for the MPC 1000?

For example, that's a used one I've been looking at and it comes with both the card and expansion board. I just wanted some clarification and was also wondering if that's a good price for a used one with a 128mb expansion board? Seems like it's the model with the new pads as well

Memory (RAM) expansion board is installed inside the machine to increase its onboard memory, used for storing samples, sequences and songs. The memory card fits into the card-reader slot and allows you to backup or save your samples, sequences and songs from the internal memory which would otherwise be lost on power down. You can store the complete contents of the MPC onboard memory many times over on a CF card which is far more reliable than floppies and zip drives.

I have a few more questions.

1. What is the maximum internal RAM for a MPC 1000?
I think it's 256mb but I just want some clarification.

2. Would a 128mb expansion board and a 128mb memory card be more than enough storage for a beginner like myself?

3. Is $520-550 a good price for a used but "like-new" MPC 1000BK with the 128mb expansion board and a 128mb memory card? Considering the fact that an expansion board is around $100

well from what I understand, the memory expansion board (128mb) is normal laptop ram (ie: it can be had for 5-10 bucks if you get the right type) however it's really a 256mb chip that for some reason the mpc only can see 128 (one side of the ram stick) ..

as clint said, this is just so you can record longer audio clips or more audio clips to actually use on any given project.


the memory card (compact flash) as clint said is for saving those audio clips and projects to be re-loaded next time you turn your machine on. A 128mb card will be alright for a short while... but maybe it would be easier if you at some point got your hands on a larger one (maybe a 2gb one for example)


So, I guess the $550 might be okay depending on where you live... dont pay attention to the cf memory card or the ram expansion because you should be able to get both of those for under 20 bucks if you needed to... it is nice if it comes with it though. The main thing you want to know is if the mpc has the new pads/sensor design... you did say it's a BK (black) model so those probably came with it installed from the factory.... but check to be sure.

The Ebay listing has the Akai RAM installed in the picture and the description says it's included.

I looked at the serial stickers on the underside photo and also my 1000. Mine doesn't say BK- "N" either but the longer serial number on mine isn't that much higher than that ebay one and mine had the better pads when I got it used.

If the expansion board RAM is so cheap, I wonder why the Ebay listing says it's around $100. Is it because the one he installed is an Akai model?

Do you guys recommend that I purchase this listing for maybe $535 or look for a cheaper one? I thought the free shipping was also convenient.

Yeah the seller would quote the higher value as the Akai RAM is way overpriced. But what he's saying is accurate taking that into consideration.

If that MPC has the newer pads. (Make the seller confirm to you it is one uniform sheet of pads; the newer version), that's a reasonable price.
