What is the best synth I can buy that works the best with midi? I have a shit roland but it only lets me choose one channel , 4A, The rest are all piano and one of drums.

Is there a synth keyboard out there that you can choose all 16 channels, and send em at once ,for instance- track 1 on mpc is 1A - Bass, Track 2 is 2A - Rhodes Track 3 is 3A - bass LFO ... Love to hear if yous guys can help. Cheers

Most any keyboard or synth that is labelled as multi timbral will do what you want. You must have a more basic arranger style Roland keyboard if you have that limitation.

https://www.google.com/search?q=multiti ... l&tbm=shop

That Google search has ten pages of synths and workstation keyboards that fit the bill. Narrow it down some and people will be happy to be more specific or do comparisons. But the question is pretty broad now as so many keyboards out their function like you are hoping for.

Thanks metatron, I appreciate your advice ,I will definitely check it out. I have also tried my roland gr 33 guitar synth but I am limited to play one channel at a time.Better than nothing, but I am looking for much more :)

It's a common thing on workstation boards like Fantoms. Then you see it in the Nords and Waldorfs and even cheaper stuff like microKORG's. So many people here have various workstations and synths, so if you name a budget or what kind of sounds/sound design capabilities that you want, people will offer up all kinds of help.

I have a Yamaha M0 and a Fantom G that come up in that search. Both are nice, the Fantom is newer and has more sounds and larger Wave ROM, also basic sampling. But workstation boards are real easy to send 16 MIDI tracks to and have internal sequencers too. So you have a lot of versatility there.

Most of the synths in the list that have more traditional sound design synthesis through their digital virtual analog architectures. No sequencers but they are generally cheaper and more suited to designing synth patches from scratch. Although something like a Fantom has a lot of possibilities to layer and tweak sounds and FX too. The workstations are just more traditional sound oriented for live players, but still work great in a one man/MPC studio setting.

So what kind of sounds do you like and how much money are you gonna burn is your only "problem" with how common 16 channel multi timbral is :-D

Meta is on point.

Generally speaking, synths that are dedicated to one type of sound (Bass or Lead synth, Guitar Synth, Drum Synth) are least useful at playing 16 channels via MIDI, but there are exceptions to the rule. And avoid keyboards with built-in speakers, these are generally 'home keyboards' which you don't really want in a studio.

My philosophy is "if you're gonna have a keyboard taking up desk space, may as well have one with useful sounds and a scratchpad sequencer in it, not just a midi controller". Main keyboard should be a workstation, if you can afford it. Mine is a Korg Triton Extreme, an oldie but goodie. As used by Bryan Michael Cox with the MPC4000 and a few rack synths.

Don't discount rack synth modules if your limited for space. These can be triggered by any MIDI keyboard and/or sequencer, and are often expandable in terms of the onboard sound sets.

I have a roland fantom S88. Very easy to use.

A nice alternative in the Roland Juno G. It is the cheaper mutlitimbral keyboard. It is light weight, has some sounds but it would be perfect as a simple song writing MPC enhancer because of the 16 midi channels and the ease of it. It's also inexpensive.

Fantom X is the bomb.

Peace

You have an Extreme too. I didn't know that. Extreme and 4k has been a very good combo for me. I agree, main keyboard should also be a workstation.

Ice wrote:Hey thanks guys, I have taken them into consideration. I was thinking about the MINIAK, any thoughts ? It is also a workstation, and in my price range..

It's basically a re-badged Alesis Micron. It's not a bad synth engine at all. Shoot for a used one as I've seen them as much as $150 less than the new price.

The Juno G that was mentioned is a lot of synth for the price, but if Miniak range is the budget might be too expensive.

Since it came up, I almost would rather I had a Fantom X than G. The G dropped support for Akai and other sample library formats. You have to recreate every part of the patches, crossfades, key assign everything, it basically sucks. Roland just shrugged off almost two decades of useful stuff by doing that.

don't forget, smiley face.

That was for metatron and his new avatar.

The micron will have only one channle right? like back to OPs original beef? THe roland Gaiha, gayer, gaier what ever its called is ok bang for the buck. Again not a multitimbral device like most work stations. I got my Fantom XR for 500 bucks though, so look around and you might get lucky.

I had to rep Dr. Krieger when I saw the flick on Facebook, Archer is a great show.

Yeah sorry Ice, the whole point of the multi timbral wants slipped my mind when the micron/Miniak boards came up.

If you can swing $700 and there's always second hand this might be something to look at.

Kind of like a modern Triton LE, only 64MB of WAV ROM, but that hasn't stopped many boards from still being classics. It's legacy Triton WAV ROM so it's proven sounds. It looks like you get a lot for your $700 on this one.

for 600 you could get a yamaha mx49 ... Has about 1000 patches from motif range... yamaha entry level workstation.. has some vcm effects too.. It doesn't have the sequencer like the mox though..
I have the mox... making beats with the pattern sequencer is really good too..
